  1. No more quick fix/low quality solutions please… enough of that last year. Premier surface dressing = tar n chippings!

    1. Hi Sean, unfortunately it’s a bit of a misconception that surface dressing is a quick fix or low quality treatment. Surface dressing provides a seal against water damage, which is responsible for the freeze/thaw that causes potholes, and it restores skid resistance. Using this dressing on roads that are in an otherwise good condition makes sense – otherwise we would be spending money digging up layers of road that are perfectly fine.
You can find out more about our use of surface dressing (premium surface dressing with a finer grade of stone on our busier roads) online: dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/surface-dressing

      1. Please can you state where the road closures will be, when the road is repaired on the B3143 Pulham please. As this is a major route for me getting to work.

        1. Hi Daryn, the description I have is that the extent of the closure is between the B3143 junction with Duntish View and the B3143 junction with Grange Farm Lane. The road closure will start at 9am so hopefully you’ll be through before the closure is in place.

  2. It’s about time that roads in Bournemouth were resurfaced. Many are passed their sell by date and are very dangerous. As a disabled driver I find it a very hard job not jolting myself to bit on many of the roads. The council seems to be able to spend millions on new accommodation for university student but can’t help the local council tax payers.

      1. Wouldn’t it be more pro-active for Dorset Council to review all roads at regular intervals? After all you are legally responsible for the condition of the roads so if vehicle damage, or injury/death, were caused by poor road condition, you risk being held responsible in any subsequent court case

        1. Hi Michael, yes – that’s exactly what we do! Each year, to assess road condition, we now carry out a high-definition camera survey across our entire road network. This assesses condition based on the different types of damage (cracking, potholes, patching and subsidence) and grades each road so work can be prioritised.

          1. Hi Michael, this is the first year we’ve carried out the camera condition surveys and yes it will include the footways as well (we’re very excited about this new bit of kit). Pavements are also inspected by our community highways officers during their routine inspections of the network.

  3. Hi, we have a growing pothole, that as traffic drives over it causes stones to fly off onto the paving area, which is highly pedestrianised. It is at the end of Long street just before the Eastbury Hotel

  4. What do you intend doing about the bodged junction where the road from Langton Matravers joins Valley Road at Herston ?

    1. Hi Robert, I’ve asked for an update from the project team involved and hope to get back to you soon.

    2. Hi Robert, I’ve heard back from the project team and they’ve provided the following update:

We’ve now analysed the end of scheme safety audit, as well as video footage of driver movements at the junction, and we’re looking into the few issues raised.

We appreciate that some drivers are finding this junction awkward. We are planning to return and amend the junction to improve the situation, when an appropriate solution has been identified.

Despite some difficulties for drivers using the junction, it has improved pedestrian safety – with many walkers and schoolchildren using the new pedestrian refuge. It has also reduced the speed of vehicles entering the village.

  5. When do you propose to resurface our road (Monsal Avenue,
    BH22 8LB)?
Work was originally I believe proposed for last December!
The kerb and pavement is also in a very bad state of disrepair.

  6. The road tarmac has decayed at the point where mine and my neighbors’ drive meets the carriageway. It’s in real need of patching up before it potholes; it goes without saying that it’s in use every day, multiple times. I live ‘Tanglewood’, Colehill Lane, Broomhill BH21 7AR

  7. The same Pot holes are having to be repeatedly repaired due to an inability to conduct a quality repair in the first place. This means that publishing how many pot holes have been repaired are being massively overstated.

  8. I have looked at dates for repairing road a see that my road is not among them I live in Barton Drive Preston on the bus route and the road is coming off of coombe valley road and it is very bad.

  9. Still nothing for Corfe Mullen then. Maybe next millennium……

    1. Hi Robert, yes – nothing on the list for Corfe Mullen this time round. However, earlier this year our surfacing gang repaired sections of Blandford Road, and Albert Road is on the list to be surfaced later this year.
We’ve also got work to footways scheduled in Corfe Mullen. We’ll also continue to investigate any reports of road damage as they come in.

  10. I have just driven home from SE Spain [Almeria] through France via ferry to Portsmouth. The 3 lane motorways in Spain and France were superb but the worst part of the journey was from Porsmouth to Weymouth full of potholes .
Does our euro money go towards French and Spanish roads?……………Rod

  11. At long last. Dorset actually doing something to redress the awful state of our roads. I sincerely hope there is enough left in the budget, especially after yet another council tax hike, to compensate at least some o f the unfortunates that fell victim to the inadequate road maintenance programme thus far. Yes I fell victim to a pot hole that was deemed unimportant enough to receive immediate repair, and left for a week, the result…………destroyed wheel and tyre, damaged beyond repair suspension arm…………..totalling £800. I know you will have all sorts of excuses for this and the poor response times to road problems, but the truth is your road maintenance programme was woefully inadequate, and we, the motorist, are the ones that have suffered. A compensation package should be part of this round of road expenditure.

  12. The slip road in Bere Regis has been reported to both you and Highways England. HE did the nearest end to A35 bypass but say the two way stretch at the village end is yours. You say it’s theirs! PLEASE talk to them, it has to someone’s responsibility. My money is on you as it’s two way!!

  13. We’ve been promised road re-surfacing for the past THREE years, and apart from some minor patchy pothole repairs, are still waiting. I have reported the appalling road surface online numerous times and have even e-mailed named officers and councillors, but all I get is promises and NO action. Part of the road surface is actually dangerous (on a blind bend, where traffic pulls out to avoid the bad surface on both sides of the road, and I have almost been hit several times) and was even recognised by the Council with “Temporary road surface” signs (but no action!) for a few months last year, but still nothing gets re-surfaced. This is the B3165 between Marshwood Garage and the foot of Lambert’s Castle (the entrance to the car park) and it needs re-surfacing not just patching.

  14. Please can you clarify which part of the B3143 junction at Piddlehinton Cross is closed, and on which days, this week?
It is unclear from the signage.
    A map would be useful.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Julian, the plan is to close the B3143 at the crossroads on Thursday 11 and then Rectory Road on Friday 12, although our team is hoping they’ll be able to complete all the work on Thursday and not need to come back on Friday. Hope this helps.

  15. I live in Lydwell Close and have been waiting for the road to be resurfaced for a number of years but when it came to the day when the Council workers came to fix the problem I was in awe of the little amount of fixing that they considered to be done!!! Tiny patches of fixing was all that happened. I am sure if this workmanship was carried out in Belfield Park Avenue there would have been an uproar. Have you been down Belfield Park Avenue? It has a beautifully surfaced road all the way from the top to the bottom! Our road looks as though the final surface coating has never been applied. If one road can be treated why not the rest of the roads. I still cannot believe the Relief road needed resurfacing too, and that was done to a very high standard as well. I am very disappointed and feel our Council has let us down in Lydwell Close.

    1. Hi Mrs Greenough,

Sorry to hear you’re unsatisfied with the condition of your road.

With over 2,300 miles of road to maintain we use annual road inspections and surveys to assess road condition based on the different types of damage (cracking, potholes, patching & subsidence) and grade each road so work can be prioritised.

Using this data, last year, we carried out extensive surface dressing in towns across Dorset, including Belfield Park Avenue and other roads in Weymouth. However, our maintenance priorities continue to be the heavily used A and B roads, as these carry the majority of the vehicles and are the essential links to communities and businesses.

With this in mind, our recent surface treatment on the relief road will prevent water ingress and surface deterioration – keeping the road in good condition for longer, meaning it won’t need more invasive and disruptive surfacing works for many more years.

I hope this goes some way to explaining our approach to road maintenance. Please continue to report road defects online: https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/roads-highways-maintenance/roads-highways-and-maintenance.aspx?folderIds=5543,6301 This will be passed on to the local community highways officer who will assess it for any ‘actionable defects’ that need repair, and recommend the road for any further action if necessary.

  16. My wife is driving to Yeovil from Shaftesbury on Friday 26th April. I see that Toomer Hill is closed. Two questions. This site says it is closed during the daytime on that day but the public notice says it is a nighttime closure. which is it?
Second question: If it is closed during the daytime , she has a very small car, Can she turn left at the Henstridge traffic lights then right at the Stalbridge crossroads to regain access to the A30 or is it closed beyond there?

    1. Hi Arthur, sorry for the confusion – the road is closed during the day from 9am to 4pm. The A30 will still be closed at that junction.
If you head back over to the roadworks map: https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/travel/travel-dorset/roadworks-closures-and-events-map.aspx, but click on the left menu option: map layers > road closures and diversions and check the box ‘road closure’ it will highlight in red the extent of the closure to help you plan your journey.
