A busy road into Blandford will be reduced to one lane while a historic bridge is repaired.
West Street across Blandford Bridge will have two-way traffic signals in place from Monday 22 July, for around six weeks, while repairs to the Grade II Listed bridge are continued.
Routine inspections highlighted that Blandford Bridge, and its associated flood arches and retaining walls, needed repairs, including:
- replacing missing stones
- repairing the faces of badly spalled stones
- re-pointing lost or damaged mortar
- structural repairs to large cracks
- repairing spalled concrete
- repairing spandrel wall
Strengthening work and waterproofing was carried out to arch number one of the bridge (town end) in 2017, and repairs to concrete defects in the flood arches were carried out earlier this year.
In July, Dorset Highways will be:
- rebuilding the spandrel wall to the upstream side of arch no.1
- rebuilding and replacing stones on the upstream parapet
- replacing stones in the arch and cutwaters
- removing vegetation, replacing stones and re-pointing on the flood arches and retaining walls
The temporary signals will be in place 24 hours-a-day for safety.
PLEASE give us the Road number?

PLEASE give us the Road number? I did not post this before. It was someone else. If you’ve seen it before why not include the roabs number as requested?

Hi Ruth, the road name is West Street, which is included in the article.
How is the work coming along. Is it on schedule.
Hi Shirley, our repairs to Blandford Bridge are scheduled to start next Monday (22 July).
If you’re referring to our work currently underway in Durweston, near Blandford, it’s going well and the A357 should be reopen on Sunday: https://news.dorsetforyou.gov.uk/2019/07/12/durweston-flood-arch-update-12-july/
Hope this helps.
