Dorset libraries are calling for children to sign up to read six books this summer as part of Space Chase, Summer Reading Challenge 2019.
The Summer Reading Challenge asks 4-12year olds to borrow and read any six library books over the summer. The theme for the 2019 Summer Reading Challenge is Space Chase, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
Children will team up with a futuristic family called The Rockets for an exciting space mission. They will track down books nabbed by a mischievous band of aliens. They will also receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells.
To take part in Space Chase, all children need to do is sign up at their nearest library, where they will be given a collector folder to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey.
Space Chase launches in libraries across Dorset on 6 July and runs until 7 September.
Cllr Tony Alford, Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for Customer, community and regulatory services, said:
“The summer reading challenge is a great way to encourage children to read. They can choose books, graphic novels or audiobooks as part of the challenge. We hope that over 7,000 Dorset children will take part in this year’s challenge.”
There’s a whole programme of events and activities planned at Dorset Council libraries for families over the summer to celebrate the Summer Reading Challenge, including Treehouse Theatre, Zoolab and lots more. Find out how to take part
Children will also be able to take part in Arts Award Discover. Managed by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England, Discover is the first step of a set of qualifications for children and young people that get them involved in and excited about the arts and culture.
Libraries are also recruiting young people aged 14-24 to help with the Challenge. With a minimum of just ten hours volunteering, a young person can develop skills, gain confidence and obtain accreditation and many choose to volunteer for longer periods – there is no upper limit for time spent.
