It is with regret that we announce that the Big Bang at Dorset Fair event will not take place at the Tank Museum in Bovington on Wednesday 18 March.
We have taken this decision as a result of exhibitors, volunteers and schools informing us of non-attendance. The quality of the event will be such that we believe it is no longer viable.
Cllr Gary Suttle, Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth and Skills, said: ”We are incredibly grateful to the event sponsors, exhibitors and everyone who put time, effort and money in to supporting this exciting and important local event for children and businesses in Dorset. We are exploring the possibility of rescheduling.”

Cllr Gary Suttle, Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth and Skills, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting a new addition to the winning Big Bang at Dorset Fair formula for 2020. This special evening event for parents, carers and their children will allow them to get excited about opportunities in the STEM industries. We also want to use this event as a platform to support businesses with their talent pipelines. We understand the importance that local businesses play in supporting the Dorset economy.”
40 local and national employers
The Big Bang at Dorset Fair 2019 was a real success. There were fun-filled shows, interactive workshops and exhibits and a wide range of careers information. We hosted 40 local and national employers. Over 1700 students attended the event. We are looking forward to welcoming an even bigger and better exhibition this year!
Challenging social mobility stereotypes
We are inviting primary schools again to the Big Bang at Dorset Fair. Recent data* tells us that children’s aspirations are shaped from a young age. 36% of children base their aspirations on people they know. The data revealed that less than 1% of children knew about a job from someone visiting their school. This has real implications for social mobility. Children from poorer backgrounds may not have successful role models from the world of work. Their aspirations could be limited as a result. The data also reveals that gender stereotyping about jobs is set from a young age.
