Representatives from Dorset Council, Dorset Police, Lulworth Estate and South West Ambulance Trust met this morning (Friday 5 June) to agree a joined up approach to the management of visitor numbers to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door ahead of the weekend.

Following the huge numbers of visitors who flocked to the area last weekend, authorities are keen to reassure local people that steps have been taken to avoid a repeat of the scenes we saw.
Some of the measures agreed by partners include a new pre-booking system for the Lulworth Estate car parks. This is due to go live next week so in the meantime the estate will be monitoring arrivals and limiting the overall number of visitors to both Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.
There will also be other traffic management measures introduced, an increase in marshalling and civil enforcement officers who will be issuing fines to people who park illegally. Marshalls will be on site to warn people of the dangers of tombstoning and to encourage visitors to take their litter home.
All partners will monitor the situation this weekend and will review if necessary next week. All continue to ask for visitors to respect our communities.
James Weld is a greedy greedy man, making thousands of pounds out of a horrid situation, he charges a fortune to park and also opened the weld coffee shop and ice crwam parlour. Maybe he should be made to pay for the emergency services which had to deal with the idiots over the past couple of weekends, his statement read he opened the car parks to help deal with the situation, what a load of bollocks, if this was the case he wouldn’t have charged for parking, a money making opportunity which this greedy bastard took advantage off.
If the car parks are going to be open then they need to be free so he doesn’t make any money out if it
Thank goodness you are trying, though I fear these disrespectful people will take more persuading so I hope that you are ready to impose stricter measures.
And that Lulworth estates will put the safety of locals ahead of financial gain.
It broke my heart to see our beautiful coast being treated so badly by people who seemed to think it was a theme park.
Please please please make sure it stops
Kind regards
Lorraine
Will the electronic information signs on M27 be used to communicate to travellers to Dorset to book parking and let them know when parking is full?
We watched from Scotland the appalling pictures from Dorset. Having taken Geography students to do beach surveys at Durdle Door beach for many years we doubt if we would do this again when possible because of the potential to have to avoid litter etc.
Well done for beginning to take a stand. Big parking charges would help. Car numberplate recognition etc.
This should have been done much earlier as it was pretty obvious people would flock there. This approach needs to be followed anywhere there is a beach in Dorset.
For us locals who followed the rules having hundreds of people who are not local flooding to Dorset and congregating on our beaches means that anyone with the virus who visited Dorset had too much opportunity to share it.
The much talked about ‘R’ is over one in the South West, its not rocket science to how that happened!
These are welcome measures but I fear people will only flock to other beaches such as Swanage Studland Weymouth Bournemouth and other beaches in Dorset causing the same problem therefore I would like to see strict measures implemented in all coastal areas with large fines issued if rules are broken asking and advising people not to visit our area is clearly not working therefore a different approach should be made.
I think “encouraging visitors to take their litter home” is relying on common sense & unselfishness which was woefully lacking last weekend.
How about offering a discount on the parking for those who show a ranger their litter they have returned to their car ?
It’s a start – that should have been made BEFORE hordes of idiots came from miles away to sh*t on our shores. What happened to ‘planning’?
Why not close it totally until the epidemic subsides. As the SW now has a high R rating this should be automatic to stop this getting worse.
Great to hear DC are taking matters in hand 🙂
Another great article!
Can information from this and other similar post please be put on the main website as well as on social media so visitors can use it to plan their journeys?
