Some of the traffic restrictions at Weymouth Harbour, introduced at the beginning of July, will be eased this weekend following three weeks of monitoring. The changes to the current temporary measures were agreed by councillors from Dorset Council and Weymouth Town Council on Tuesday following recommendations from officers and Dorset Police.
Currently, restrictions prevent traffic passing through the harbour area between 10.30am and 9pm but having observed traffic levels for several weeks now, the impact on businesses and the needs of other harbour users, councillors have agreed to reduce those restrictions to between 10.30am and 6pm, starting this Saturday 25 July.
Traffic restrictions were put in place on 4 July to allow businesses along the harbour to provide safe, socially distanced seating for customers as the hospitality sector began to reopen following lockdown easing.
By changing the sitting out spaces around the harbour it is hoped Weymouth’s night-time economy will be spread across a wider area rather than create a specific focus for refreshments in this one particular part of the town.
While the road will be open to traffic from 6pm each evening, parking spaces that are already closed off along the harbourside will be used by the businesses to continue to provide outdoor seating for customers.
Cllr Ray Bryan, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and the Environment, said:
“We have been working with our partners at Weymouth Town Council and Dorset Police for several weeks now to agree the measures at the harbour and this will continue throughout the summer.
“We jointly agreed to put these restrictions in place at the beginning of July to help hospitality businesses reopen safely while adhering to the rules on social distancing. That element has been successful, and all agencies are pleased to have seen a café culture type atmosphere develop on the harbourside during the day.
“We said at the start that we might alter plans to suit the needs of the town. As such, our monitoring has shown that we are in a position to reduce some of those measures, without compromising anyone’s safety. The need to encourage residents and visitors to other parts of the town is a priority. We will keep monitoring and may decide to alter plans again if the need arises, but we will only do that with support of partners.
“The council really is in a difficult position; we have to follow Government guidelines, and these measures were put in as a result of that advice as lockdown eased. We are trying to support all local businesses, while ensuring the safety of everyone who uses the harbour. We know we can’t please everyone, but we are doing what we can to keep people safe from COVID-19 while supporting businesses to get back on their feet.”
Councillors met on Tues 21 July to consider the latest proposals and views from other partners and were in agreement with this approach.
The current traffic restrictions are the best thing that has happened to the harbour, for both businesses and customers alike. I for one prefer to sit outside at this point in time and I think reducing the restriction to 6pm will take away from the current feelgood feeling. Traffic noise and exhaust fumes are not conducive to enjoying a meal or drink on the harbour side, especially when 6pm and later is the time a lot of people choose to eat. Reduce the restriction to 8pm and let us all enjoy what is currently working very well. Encouraging residents and visitors to other parts of the town is understandable but another agenda I would suggest. Let us and the visitors enjoy this continental feel while we can and keep it as a permanent fixture for summer seasons in the future. This will ensure Weymouth will be the first choice holiday resort for many and so all businesses will benefit with he increase in numbers.
Thoroughly enjoyed the new set up. Fabulous seeing everyone sitting outside, like being abroad. Pity it can’t be a regular thing in peak season at least.
The large groups gathering on the harbour side and drinking their own alcohol are not practising social distancing are in danger of making Weymouth a new hot spot for the spread of Covid 19. The council need to enforce social distancing in these areas immediately . Banning people drinking their own alcohol on the harbour side would help ,There are no toilets for them they are peeing up against people’s houses and in the back streets. This whole thing has been a disaster for residents who live near the harbour side
Fine if you’re on holiday, nightmare if you life in the town centre trying to get out of town or Return home. The town Is gridlocked so you can sit in our only road to the town bridge. Wonderful
