Dorset Highways maintenance gangs are out across the county continuing to repair road damage and maintain vital infrastructure.
To allow this work to take place safely, the area of the road being worked on will be closed. Daytime road closures are 9am to 4pm and night work is usually from 7pm to 6am.

Unfortunately, over the last few days there have been far too many pedestrians stepping over the tape and walking in the works area – putting themselves and our workforce at risk of injury. From Wednesday 27 January, resurfacing will revert back to originally planned night working – road closed 7pm to 6am following morning
A30 Crackmore, Oborne – 28 Jan to 3 Feb
road closed 9am to 4pm
We will do our best to keep you updated if our schedule of work changes. The latest information on all planned road works can be found online.
Additional safety measures
Additional safety measures are being taken to ensure the health and safety of workers in these unprecedented times. We are also working closely with other highway authorities across the south west and with industry bodies to share knowledge of new ways of working.
- single person vehicle movements both to and from site
- maintaining current social distancing requirements at all times
- daily toolbox talks to share the latest safe working guidance and COVID-19 updates
- daily health screening involving temperature checks and general well-being
- no high-risk workers on site
- revised working practices to reduce the number of staff on site while still maintaining health and safety standards when working on the highway
- changes to site welfare, including additional toilet facilities and hygiene provision
Please be mindful of how you speak to our workforce, they are working within the Government’s guidance for construction activity – that it should continue where it fits with both the current Public Health England requirements and in accordance with industry safety guidance.
Does East Dorset exist ?? We pay enough Council Tax !!
Hi Colin, I’m sorry we’re not in the east of the county during January, however, I’m aware we have surfacing work scheduled for West Moors Road and Ringwood Road in March. If there is particular road damage you would like to report, please use our online form: https://dorset-self.achieveservice.com/service/Report-a-pothole
May we know details of road repair/resurfacing in the Sherborne rural area in 2021?
Hi Gordon, best thing is to check our online roadworks map https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/travel/travel-dorset/roadworks-road-closures.aspx this will give you all planned works in your area, both our maintenance activity and any utility work on the highway.
We do our best to keep you updated on resurfacing works on a rolling monthly basis and publish other seasonal programmes of work before they start (usually March/April time). We’re working on being able to give a better long-term overview of planned highway work, we’re just not quite there yet!
Kerb safety works in Station Rd, West Bay have been started (in a fashion) but are incomplete. At present the bollards are all over the place.
Hi J.p. Sorry to hear that. Please can you report this using our online form https://dorset-self.achieveservice.com/service/Report-other-highways-issue for our local community highway officer to look into this.
On several occasions we at the intersection between Abbotsbury Road and Chickerell Road have had car write-offs, injuries and at least one death due to cars speeding from Chickerell in the direction of Weymouth town. In spite of various efforts to stop cars from driving direct towards my front garden, this has done nothing to alleviate dangerous driving generally . In addition, the T-junction from Abbotsbury Road into Chickerell Road is very often misused and we nearly had a head-on collision the other day when we were heading towards Chickerell and someone just pulled out into Chickerell Road without looking left.
The simple solution to this would be a reasonably substantial mini roundabout. It would be simple to install and idiot-proof to negotiate and would slow down traffic coming into town.
In the absence of putting a mini roundabout, could you at least put in a flashing light, reminding drivers of the speed limit, such as many villages have.
Many thanks.
