Dorset Road Fix – May 2021

Dorset Highways maintenance gangs are out across the county continuing to repair road damage.

To allow this work to take place safely, the area of the road being worked on will be closed. Daytime road closures are 9am to 4pm and night work is usually from 7pm to 6am.

This is not an exhaustive list of all roads being repaired. Dorset Highways’ annual road maintenance programme, includes patching, micro-surfacing, surface dressing, in-situ recycling, road preservation and resurfacing treatments.

Using a variety of surface treatments ensures that more of Dorset Council’s roads get repaired with the budget available, compared to using resurfacing alone.

Surface dressing is also underway across the county.

All planned road works can be found online.

Please use our online form to report road-related issues/damage. This goes directly to the local community highways officer for assessment.

Additional safety measures

Additional safety measures are being taken to ensure the health and safety of workers in these unprecedented times. We are also working closely with other highway authorities across the south west and with industry bodies to share knowledge of new ways of working.

  • single person vehicle movements both to and from site
  • maintaining current social distancing requirements at all times
  • daily toolbox talks to share the latest safe working guidance and COVID-19 updates
  • daily health screening involving temperature checks and general well-being
  • no high-risk workers on site
  • revised working practices to reduce the number of staff on site while still maintaining health and safety standards when working on the highway
  • changes to site welfare, including additional toilet facilities and hygiene provision

Please be mindful of how you speak to our workforce, they are working within the Government’s guidance for construction activity – that it should continue where it fits with both the current Public Health England requirements and in accordance with industry safety guidance.

  1. There is a 2Ft wide trench about 3 ” deep now where it has sunk from a previous road repair ! It’s in Ameysford road Ferndown outside No 60 and stretches now about 3/4 the width of the road.
Can anything be done to repair this ever worsening trench pleas. I have contacted our local Councillor twice now 10 days apart but have had NO reply from my Emails – why do we vote for these people to supposedly represent us when they do nothing ???
A reply or even a repair would be most welcome as it’s not helping cars suspensions and in turn very dangerous to cyclists and motorcycle users.
Many thanks in advance, I look forward to a favourable reply.
Derek Baker of Leeson Drive Ferndown.

      1. Thanks for that but 3 weeks after you have passed it on still nothing has been done about rectifying that trench – not even a white line around it indicating that at least somebody from the council has ebpven been out to look at it.

  2. Reading the latest Dorset Council newsletter reminded me that Dorset County advised myself and others, by letter, that road works were to be carried out on Bay Road, Gillingham on April 14. Signs were put in place, but no work on the road was apparent, and the signs were removed again.
    What happened?

    1. Hi Derek, there was a manhole cover that needed to be replaced. Although a relatively small job, we needed a road closure to carry the work out safely due to the position of the manhole cover in the road.

  3. What’s happening with the structural issue on the Cranborne Road just outside Wimborne? There’s been traffic lights and one way traffic for over six months, but no repairs, which is unacceptable.

    1. Hi Steve, sorry this has been going on for so long. As you’ll know, the temporary lights are in place due to a landslide next to the northbound carriageway, which makes the lane unsafe for vehicles.
It’s been slow progress due to legal processes needed to gain access to the site from private land to carry out an environmental and ecological survey prior to vegetation clearance, we also needed to do a topographical survey and an intrusive ground investigation.
We’re currently awaiting the laboratory results from the tests and the geotechnical report from the specialised contractor – we’ll then be able to take the necessary steps to stabilise the slope and safely reopen this lane to traffic.

  4. When will the dreadful ‘ repairs ‘ be rectified along Bournemouth Road,Blandford St. Mary? The potholes were ‘filled’ last September, leaving the road surface ten times worse than before. Traffic is now travelling down the middle of the road to avoid the bumps.it really is in a shocking state,I reported it to the Highways Dept. several months ago.

  5. Horton Road from Ashley Heath roundabout to past St Ives Wood dips and holes in road not fix noise from empty lorries and trailers goes on. Reported on many occasions last time in November 2020 and got no reply.
