Helping Dorset’s care leavers to stay connected

More than 65 new laptops have been provided to Dorset Council care leavers over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Laptops for children

In June 2020 we were provided with 35 laptops and wireless routers by the Department of Education under the ‘get help with technology’ scheme. These laptops are provided to help support care leavers aged between 16 and 25 years, who do not have access to a laptop or tablet.

The first 35 laptops that were received at the earlier part of this scheme (June 2020) were distributed to our care leavers across Dorset who had no internet access. Since then, a further 31 ASUS laptops have been given to support our care leavers. These devices will be distributed by the personal advisers within the social care team to the young people who need them to help them stay connected.

Cllr Andrew Parry, Portfolio Holder for Children, Education and Early Help, said:

“We are really excited to be able to distribute more laptops to our care leavers who need them. It’s really important that we make sure children and young people have equal access to devices and the internet, so they can not only learn at home, but also to help them stay in contact with family and friends.”
