The 999 Emergency Services Day was adopted in 1918 as a national day of thanks.
It begins at 9am on the ninth day of the ninth month with two minutes’ silence to remember and thank the heroic men and women – more than 7,500 members of the police, fire and rescue service and wider NHS, and to honour those who have been killed as a result of their duties.
It also gives us the opportunity to celebrate the dedication of all 999 workers for their selflessness and commitment, while promoting the wide range of career opportunities which are available.
The remainder of the day will give people the chance to show their support for NHS and emergency services staff and volunteers by using the hashtag #999DayUK on social media. It is also a fantastic chance for anyone who is interested in a career in the emergency services to find out more about the wide range of opportunities which are available.
The council is proud to support and promote the exemplary work carried out by blue light services across Dorset – and beyond.
