To encourage residents to shop locally, Dorset Council is supporting local events with free parking this festive season.
In ongoing support of the local economy, Dorset Council offers town councils six free parking days in Dorset Council-owned car parks each year. This is made up of Small Business Saturday in December, plus one weekday in December and four days for events which generate valuable footfall for that town.
All Dorset Council-owned town centre car parks will be free on Small Business Saturday (4 December) in Beaminster, Blandford, Bridport, Dorchester, Gillingham, Lyme Regis, Shaftesbury, Sherborne, Sturminster Newton, Wareham, Weymouth and Wimborne.
Additional free parking dates have also been confirmed for individual town council Christmas events in Blandford, Dorchester, Gillingham, Lyme Regis, Shaftesbury, Sherborne, Sturminster Newton and Weymouth.
On-street parking charges, and private car park charges, will still apply. Drivers are encouraged to check signage on machines at each car park to avoid paying unnecessarily.

Any Chance of Free parking at the Pavilion on 5th December to support local crafter’s as they celebrate Christmas at an all day Craft Fair?
Hi Dave, the Town Council choose the days where they would like free parking, sorry this isn’t one of the ones they selected.
Are the Council admitting that lower/no car park charges would encourage more people to shop locally? How about a trial for 12 months? How does this relate to the huge increases for West Bay and Lyme Regis? It doesn’t add up.
What about free parking in Christchurch and Highcliffe please .?
Hi Anne, these areas now come under BCP Council: https://www.bcpcouncil.gov.uk/Parking/Parking.aspx
I’m afraid I don’t know if BCP are planning any free parking days.
Wareham – not included St Johns Hill Car Park – Why?
What free parking dates in Ferndown
? no free parking in Christchurch
We don’t operate car parks in Christchurch. You’d be best speaking to BCP Council – James
Seeing as the parking machines are out of service in a lot of places (I still don’t know why), it’s probably going to work out nicely. Not sure why you’re encouraging people to shop locally, when part of the excuse for doubling the price of shoppers’ parking permits was so we’d be able to park further afield.
