Resurfacing work on Custom House Quay

As part of Dorset Council’s public realm improvements along Custom House Quay in Weymouth, the road is being resurfaced over three nights next week.

A temporary road surface has been in place since the removal of the disused railway lines, with the road always scheduled for final surfacing as part of the current improvement works.

Custom House Quay will be closed between the Esplanade and St Mary Street from 8pm to 6am the following morning on Monday 28 March, Tuesday 29 March and Wednesday 30 March for the road surface to be laid.

The new wider pavement on the harbour side of the road between the fish loading bay and St Mary Street will also be surfaced during this night work.

From Monday 4 April, daytime imprinting work will start. On the carriageway, work will start on the crossing point near the Pavilion end of the road and then continue towards St Mary Street – with the road surface being imprinted with a herringbone effect from South Parade to St Mary Street. This will be done in sections under a rolling road closure.

At the same time, imprinting works will be carried out on the harbour side footway between the fish loading bay and St Mary Street. This will be a paving slab effect. The path will be closed in sections and pedestrians will be asked to cross to the opposite pavement.

Access will be maintained for businesses as best as possible, and the imprinted surface can be driven on as soon as it has cured – roughly one-hour.

Cllr Ray Bryan, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment, said: “These final works to imprint the carriageway and footway will involve rolling footway and road closures, where the works area will change each day.

“Please be patient while our contractors carry out these specialist works and look for signage in the area for the alternative route to take.”

Concrete foundations will be put in place ready for new benches of oak and Portland Stone, and the remaining wooden posts will also start to be installed before the start of the school holidays.

Work will pause for two weeks during the Easter holidays – with all work barriers and equipment removed and the site along Custom House Quay made safe on Friday 8 April. Work will resume on Monday 25 April when imprinting and final finishing work will restart.

During the night closures, car park permit holders will be able to park in the Pavilion Car Park as per usual.

The Traffic Regulation Order for the scheme will come into effect from Friday 8 April. The effect of the Order will be to revoke and/or introduce parking restrictions along a section of Custom House Quay.
