Custom House Quay in Weymouth will be fully reopening for the Easter holiday period.
Dorset Council highways service has been working on public realm improvements to create a better mixed-use environment, with work now set to pause for two weeks.
The route will be left clean and tidy, with all barriers and equipment moved from site, at the end of Friday 8 April.
Since work started on 4 October 2021:
- the footway adjacent to buildings between St Mary Street and Pilgrims Way has been widened and new paving slabs laid
- the footway along the harbour side has been widened and resurfaced
- the footway between Pilgrims Way and the Esplanade has been renewed
- the fisherman’s ramp near St Mary Street has been rebuilt
- kerbing has been realigned along the route
- new drainage channels have been installed to the new alignment of the road
- the road has been resurfaced
Following night work to surface the road and footway, imprinting work has started along the route and this will be completed after the Easter pause.
Footway StreetPrint – where the surface is heated up and stamped with the chosen pattern and a colour-wash applied – is being completed on the harbour side footway, with the colour set to be applied after the Easter break.
When the final phase of work resumes on Monday 25 April, TexPrint – where a 15mm layer of coloured hot asphalt is laid over the road surface and stamped with the desired pattern – work will start to imprint the road, with the carriageway having a herringbone effect and crossing points having an offset brick (running bond) pattern.
Street furniture installation, including benches, will also be completed when work restarts.
Cllr Ray Bryan, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment, said: “With our workers called away for gritting duties and some atrocious wet weather, we’re not quite where we had hoped to be, but I’m pleased we’ve ensured that this popular area will be fully reopened for the Easter holiday period.
“I know that the area will be unfinished and not look complete, but we felt it more important to pause work and allow full access for residents and visitors during the Easter holiday period.”
From Monday 25 April, rolling road and footway closures will be back in place for the imprinting work to be finished.
This work is being carried out in small sections to maintain access for businesses as best as possible. The imprinted surface can be driven on as soon as it has cured – roughly one-hour.
The harbour side footway will also be closed in sections for the colouring process and pedestrians will be asked to cross to the opposite pavement to avoid the works area.
All imprinting, lining and signing work is currently scheduled to finish by mid-May. Stone benches should be in place by the end of May.
The Traffic Regulation Order for the scheme will come into effect from Friday 8 April. The effect of the Order will be to revoke and/or introduce parking restrictions along a section of Custom House Quay.

When is this work going to be complete, its taking forever? Likewise the station forecourt was supposed to be completed in March and before Easter.

Why are the cars, and even motorvans, being allowed to park on the new pedestrian pavements??.? Totally full of parked vehicles this morning. Had to actually walk in the road in one place as motorvan parked so near to Harbour wall.
The paving will need replacing at this rate before the seats are even put on place.
Hi Pearl, sorry about this. We now have signs and cones out to advise drivers that there is no parking in the area. Our parking enforcement officers will also be monitoring the area.
I hope this is true as it will make a change to get my wife’s wheelchair down the harbourside when we visit in June – without playing Russian Roulette with traffic.
