Mandatory housing measures for all poultry and captive birds to be introduced

The Animal and Plant Health Agency will put in place mandatory housing measures to protect poultry and captive birds from avian influenza from 7 November.

This means that, from this time, it will be a compulsory requirement for all bird keepers across England to keep their birds housed and to follow strict biosecurity measures, to limit the spread and to eradicate the disease.

More information is available from the agency web pages

  1. I want to report a flock of chickens not being shut in in Purse Caundle,nr Sherborne Dorset, these people have not shut them in at any time in the last bird flu scares which I think is grossly unfair to all other local poultry keepers who would have to have their flocks destroyed if there was an outbreak due to this flock not adhering to the rules.

    1. Hi Brenda – we don’t enforce this. you will need to report to the Animal and Plant Health Agency Intelligence Unit
To report any non-compliance relating to animal health and welfare, plants and bee controls, including disease risk, email intelunit@apha.gov.uk

      Please include:

as much information as you can about the non-compliance that you are reporting (for example, what is the issue, where did it occur, who was involved, when did it happen?)
the type of non-compliance you are reporting in the subject line (for example, imports, exports, welfare)
