New covered bicycle parking is now available for Weymouth residents and visitors.
The shelters can be found at Governor’s Lane (DT4 8DD) and at Harbourside (DT4 8NA), offering easy access cycle parking.
Both sites have CCTV coverage and are within walking distance of the town centre.
We provided the new shelters using central Government funding we receive for transport improvements around the county as part of the Local Transport Plan.
Cllr Simon Gibson, Dorset Council Cabinet Lead Member for Highways, said: “We welcome these new shelters. They offer more options for people to use and store their bicycles rather than use cars for travel to work or for leisure. This is good for the environment, their health and, of course, their pocket!
“Cycling plays a key role in our aspirations to reduce traffic and pollution as part of our Climate and Ecological Emergency strategy and action plan, so providing facilities like these new shelters will make it easier for people to leave their cars at home and cycle.”
There was previously a shelter at Westham Bridge, but this was removed due to vandalism. We worked with Weymouth Town Council to find alternative, and better, cycle parking in and around town centre. Residents were asked for their views on the location of a replacement shelter in more convenient location, and 91% supported the removal of the Westham Bridge shelter and relocation.
Cllr Ryan Hope, Chair of Weymouth Town Council’s Service Committee, said: “As part of the town council’s commitment to addressing the climate emergency in Weymouth, the new shelter facilities can help towards encouraging more people to cycle into the town centre.
“Now Dorset Council has completed the installation, Weymouth Town Council will take on their long-term maintenance, along with other highway cycle racks and benches in Weymouth.”
The motorcycle parking bays in Governor’s Lane car park will be repositioned next to the new cycle shelter. In the meantime, there is alternative motorcycle parking available in the town, including at nearby Park Street.
