Dorset Children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families, who may need some extra support, are invited to enjoy the forthcoming activities of the ‘Artz & Sportz’ Dorset Council project. The project has seen the Christmas holiday 2022 programme featuring Cinderella at Poole Lighthouse in particularly high demand and many events are already fully booked, however there is still availability for the Fairy Tale Forest event (details at Artz & Sportz Facebook).
Artz & Sportz offers school holiday and term-time arts and sports events for children and young people who are disabled (aged 5 - 18) and their families. Children can get involved at sports and outdoor centres, museums, woodlands, theatres and other venues across Dorset. Examples of activities have included: drama, music and craft workshops; indoor and outdoor sports activities such as climbing and archery; swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding as well as nature activities. Children are also able to be left in the care of a friendly and experienced support team (where the team is able to meet children’s individual needs).
Artz & Sportz also fund term time activities including swimming at Purbeck Sports Centre, Athletics at Thomas Hardye School and Gymnastics at Dorchester YMCA. (see posters)
Parents have said:
“It gives our child the chance to join other children in activities, as an only child he finds the holidays rather lonely. And it gives us a break from looking after him. Even if we stay and watch, he is not looking for our support or attention for a few hours.”
“My children get cared for and have the most fantastic new experiences while I get to have much needed time to myself.”
