As part of our road maintenance programme, a number of roads in the area are being given an ‘early life intervention’ to keep them in good condition.
Road preservation is a preventative treatment which stops water ingress and surface deterioration.
An asphalt liquid is sprayed onto the road surface to seal micro-cracking and prevent water from causing more damage – leading to potholes.
Our contractor RMS (Road Maintenance Services Ltd) will be carrying out the work, which needs dry weather so may be subject to change.
Road closures with diversions will be in place.
Please help by adhering to parking restrictions during the work – there will be no on-street parking during the closures to allow the work to take place, or the following evening while road markings are put back. Thank you.
We have had to postpone some works due to overnight rain, so please note the changes given below in bold. As always, please keep an eye on local signs and diversions in case further changes are necessary. Thank you.

Early, preventative maintenance is the most cost-effective way to maintain roads.
In the lifecycle of a road, preservation is the first intervention to keep the road surface in a good condition.
The next intervention level to keep roads in a good condition is patching of the worst damage followed with a surface dressing to seal the road from water.
Damage beyond these interventions would require resurfacing, which is much more costly.
By carrying out repairs specific to the damage evidenced in the individual road, we can carry out maintenance on more roads, reduce emissions by using less raw material and create less waste compared to solely using resurfacing.
All scheduled roadworks can be found online.
Re-surfacing is more costly now but in the long run it is much cheaper and you you don’t have to attend to it for many years.
Incidently the A 31 nearing Ferndown at the East approaches there are massive service cracking at the Roundabouts near the Garage / Tyre depotin fact at all those three roundabouts.
This is all very well BUT what about us country dwellers where the lanes are a disgrace. Try driving along Bessells Lane through Farrington and also the road from Bessells to Child Okeford. Car springs need replacing and costs a lot of money. Good money for garage owners carrying out the repairs. Many of us are pensioners and don’t find it easy.
Hi Elizabeth, please can you fill in our online form where you’ll find a map to pinpoint the issues https://dorset-self.achieveservice.com/service/Report-a-pothole Many thanks, Claire
This is what needs doing to all the pothole in Dorset domestic roads not just the main roads. Drivers pay a lot of money towards our roads but we don’t get value for money.
Please can you sort out the A35 between Morecombelake and Chideock – there are several dips and holes and a subsidence on the hill going West
Apologies, my earlier comment should have asked about the A35 between Charmouth and Morecombelake, especially the subsidence going East up the hill towards Morecombelake, please?
Hi Richard, please can you report the issues using our online form where you can pinpoint the locations on a map – https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/roads-highways-maintenance/report-a-problem-on-the-road-or-pavement Many thanks, Claire
My locality has just had this surface dressing applied leaving a dark road surface. None of the pot holes, and there are many, have been filled. I cannot understand how the surface dressing surrounding each pothole can prevent water penetration. It is the potholes that need urgent attention and these litter the area. The resulting dark surface also hinders spotting the potholes when driving.
When are the potholes going to be dealt with? I understand that central government has just provided funding to repair potholes. Has the Council received any funding for pothole repairs? If so, when and where will this resource be allocated?
Dear Mr Elliott, please can you let me know your postcode so I can locate the area in question and advise you further regarding the surface? Regarding funding for pothole repairs, we have confirmation from central government that we will receive £2.9 million. We will be using this to repair the backlog of potholes following January’s cold and wet weather and any funds remaining will used towards preventative maintenance, such as new surfacing. Many thanks, Claire
Hi,
West Bay Road, from the Crown roundabout to West Bay car park has recently undergone your “Early Life Intervention” work to seal it and prevent further water ingress, therefore helping to prevent future pot holes. I must admit that on completion it was aesthetically pleasing.
Can you please explain to me why, after this very recent work and expense, that the surface is already showing signs of cracking up in many places along its 1250 yard length which is surely going to attract water, this appears to me to be a “sticking plaster” approach and a complete waste of your time and our money.
Please can you kindly complete the details using our online form so you can pinpoint the location and further details – https://dorset-self.achieveservice.com/service/Report-other-highways-issue thank you, Claire
