2023 marks the 39th year of Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June), when Dorset Council will join thousands of charities and voluntary organisations in celebrating the contribution volunteers make across Dorset.
With this year’s theme of ‘Celebrate and Inspire’ we want to say a big thank you to all the wonderful volunteers and hopefully also encourage more people to get involved in volunteering in whatever way works for them.
Everyday volunteers from all walks of life are transforming communities and the lives of others through their actions and the support they provide such as food delivery, medication collection, clearing weeds in our parks and open spaces, to helping our local sports groups and youth clubs thrive, dog walking, befriending and much more.
Cllr Laura Beddow, Cabinet member for Culture, Communities and Customer Services, said:
“We want to shine a light on the incredible volunteers in Dorset and say a huge thank you for all you do in your communities. Whether you’re someone who helps to support Council services or someone who volunteers with local groups and organisations that make Dorset such a very special place to be, Thank you.”
Dave Allen works as a volunteer helping refugees from Afghanistan and Syria improve their English language skills.
He said: “It is a privilege to be able to support these families who have been forced to flee their country and people they love. Their resilience, courage, and desire to make the best of their current situation is humbling.
“Teaching is always a pleasure when the student is keen to learn, full of enthusiasm and determined to always try their hardest; and this has always been my experience when working with Dorset refugees.
“I am always made to feel most welcome and am treated to delicious meals and drinks from their country. It really is impossible to refuse their hospitality! Over time I have benefited from learning a great deal about their culture and view of life.
“Learning about their background, can however be both sad and depressing. They desperately miss their country but are also ambitious for their children to grasp the educational opportunities available to them here. I am convinced this country will gain so much from these children as they grow up.”
Dorset is fortunate with an army of more than 7000 volunteers, but we still need more. It is a rewarding way to make a difference – whilst making new friends.
If you would like to be part of the volunteering community in Dorset, we would like to hear from you. Whether it’s a one-off task or a regular volunteering commitment –there is literally something for everyone regardless of ability, skills, location, or time commitment.”
