Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre with support from Active Dorset, is providing accessible and affordable clubs for Dorset’s young people.
Dorset’s young people now have greater access to affordable clubs thanks to Active Dorset Satellite Club Funding, Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre has launched two new teen clubs, with the climbing club going from strength to strength.
Ben Grist, aged 13, shares, “I value the chance of climbing outside on the crags, which I haven’t done before! I’ve learned so much and spoken to a couple of my friends about the club in the hope that they will sign up, and we can climb together.”
Riley Churchill aged 17 adds, “I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and value the inclusivity of the club. The instructors are brilliant, and I feel exhilarated after climbing club.” Riley’s enthusiasm has even led him to express interest in the volunteer assistant instructor program set to launch in spring 2024.
These low-cost sessions, only £5 per session, are made possible by generous funding from Active Dorset, making them accessible to a wider range of local youth.
Young people living in Westham, are even able to participate for free with thanks to The Dorset South West Methodist Circuit.
These sessions not only foster social engagement, but also build essential life skills and encourage appreciation for Dorset’s stunning coastline.
Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre offers a whole range of educational programs, from day visits for schools to alternative provisions for those struggling with mainstream schooling. The Weymouth Outdoor Education is run and managed by Dorset Council.
They also host after-school youth group sessions, holiday clubs, activity sessions for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, and the popular Hot Food and Activity (HAF) program for children receiving free school meals.
Cllr Byron Quayle, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Children, Education and Early Help said;
“One of our priorities is for children to have healthy and active lives, as well as enjoy growing up in Dorset, so I’m delighted to learn about this affordable opportunity for young people in Dorset to enjoy the outdoors, discover our stunning coastline, and build new friendships.”
