Children who have experienced early-life trauma will receive improved therapeutic care from Youth Practitioners.
A group of 17 youth practitioners from The Harbour has successfully earned an innovative Level 4 Certificate in Therapeutic Childcare.
This pilot course is the first of its kind, and far exceeds the minimum mandatory requirement for the role.
These practitioners operate from The Harbour which brings together a range of accommodation options, services and outreach support centred around a residential hub for children and young people.
The Mulberry Bush, who ran the initiative, offers a range of training courses and events to improve the skills, knowledge and confidence of people who work with vulnerable children and young people.
Ashleigh, a senior youth practitioner at The Harbour, shared her perspective on the course, saying, “Completing the course has not only boosted our team’s confidence but has also enabled us to provide more effective therapeutic support to the young people under our care.
“It has been instrumental in helping us understand the trauma and experiences that underlie their behaviours.”
This initiative stems from Dorset Council’s continued commitment to delivering exceptional care and support to children and young people.
Dr Dave Roberts of The Mulberry Bush commended Dorset Council’s dedication, saying, “Dorset Council’s commitment goes beyond managing trauma; it’s about actively understanding and addressing it.
“Witnessing the pilot year unfold and observing its positive impact on practice has been a privilege. I commend Dorset Council for their forward-thinking approach to improving care, and for choosing innovation over the easier path.”
Successful completion of this course also contributes to the Continued Professional Development of youth practitioners, ensuring they are as good as possible in their field of practice.
Councillor Byron Quayle, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Children, Education, and Early Help, said “One of our priorities is for young people to have the help they need when they need it so I’m very grateful to the individuals who have taken the time to complete this course, and who have shown their commitment to providing the very best care to some of Dorset’s most vulnerable children.”
“The completion of this course also underlines Dorset Council’s commitment to providing excellent CPD opportunities to its employees.”
