Health concerns surrounding 5G

Public Health England takes the lead on health matters relating to radio frequency electromagnetic fields (radio waves) and 5G. PHE’s advice is informed by the work of expert bodies such as the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO has been undertaking an extensive review of the evidence for health effects arising from exposures to radio waves, including the sort emitted by 5G networks.

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), which is formally recognised by WHO, independently produces guidelines for exposure to radio waves.

The WHO’s opinion, based on reviews of the evidence, is that exposures to radio waves below the limits recommended in international exposure guidelines do not appear to have any known consequence on health.

Public Health Dorset statement

We have been in touch with PHE for the latest advice and guidance regarding 5G technology in Dorset.

PHE summarises its position on radio waves and health relating to mobile phone base stations on its website, and this has been updated to include information relating to 5G as this technology develops.

The health effects of exposure to radio waves have been researched extensively over several decades. Independent expert groups in the UK and internationally have examined the research and their conclusions support the view that health effects are unlikely to occur if exposures are below international guideline levels.

PHE’s main advice about radio waves from base stations is that the ICNIRP guidelines should be adopted for limiting exposures. ICNIRP guidelines relate to frequencies used by both existing mobile systems and those intended for 5G.

PHE advises that it is possible there may be a small increase in overall exposure to radio waves when 5G is added to an existing network or in a new area, but the overall exposure is expected to remain low relative to exposure guidelines and therefor there should be no consequences for public health. ICNIRP guidelines apply up to 300 GHz, well beyond the maximum (few tens of GHz) frequencies under discussion for 5G.

PHE continues to monitor the health-related evidence applicable to radio waves, including in relation to 5G, and is committed to updating its advice as required.

  1. Have the council seen the evidence where insects and small birds have been dying when exposed to 5G waves.? It is also going to interfere with weather reading satellites so a Met Office man told me yesterday. Please rethink. As if.

      1. Hi Sandra.
        Thanks for your comment.
I’m not sure Belgium has banned 5G. I believe Brussels has placed a pilot on hold amid concerns that the antennas to be used in that trial weren’t technically able to measure the amount of radiation emitted and, therefore, staying within legal limits could not be guaranteed.
Here in Dorset all trials will follow national and international emission guidelines. This recent article about mobile emissions in the UK may also be of interest – https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2020/02/ofcom-uk-tests-5g-mobile-emissions-and-finds-no-concerns.html

  2. Over 230 scientists from more than 40 countries have expressed their “serious concerns” regarding the ubiquitous and increasing exposure to EMF generated by electric and wireless devices already before the additional 5G roll-out. They are calling for the adoption of the precautionary principle and a moratorium on 5G before it is rolled out. This would seem like common sense. They refer to the fact that ”numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines”. Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans. Damage goes well beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harmful effects to both plants and animals.

      1. Besides the possible health issues to us and all other life from microwave radiation, we appear to have the oil and water alchemy of a government purporting to be concerned about bio-diversity, climate change, the use of resources and saving the planet etc while on the other hand backing the roll out of ever more non essential technology and infrastructure that requires a high carbon footprint to produce, run, manage and recycle. The cognitive disconnect of this is striking, but then that’s not what this roll out is all about and the govt know it, instead they would rather go along to get along with the hypocrisy of supra-national agendas that by pass national governments to be delivered at a local level to a generally unwitting public. Councils should be aware that it is written into their constitution that they have a duty of care to the health and well being of their citizens and if they fail in their duty in this respect they may be liable and could be held to account for failing in delivery of that duty. Adoption of Public Health England guidance based on World Health Organization findings should not exempt councils from this duty of care.

Other councils, Devon for example have rightly woken up to this issue and Dorset should do the same, see:-

  3. Switzerland Stops 5G — Medical Association Concerned About Cancer and Damage to Nervous System (Updated) February 12, 2020

    By B.N. Frank

UPDATE: A report by Silicon Republic, Feb. 14, reads in part: “While some cantons had imposed restrictions on planning permission for 5G sites, it does not apply to the whole of Switzerland.”

In 2017, doctors and scientists worldwide requested a 5G moratorium. In 2018 5G was installed in some New York neighborhoods anyway and residents and their pets immediately started experiencing symptoms from exposure. Some put their homes up for sale because of it. This was reported on social media by Dr. Naomi Wolf.

People getting sick from 5G isn’t exclusive to New York (see 1, 2, 3). Residents of Switzerland have been particularly vocal about their opposition especially after being exposed to it. Now the country has stopped the use of all new towers.
