A right of way that crosses Lodmoor Nature Reserve in Weymouth will be temporarily closed while engineering work takes place.
The right of way will be closed from Monday 16 September for approximately one month. An alternative route around the reserve will be available for those who need access.
Map showing closure in red and alternative route around the reserve in blue.
Dorset Council will be replacing a drainage structure that allows water to pass underneath the walkways through the reserve. The closure is needed to replace a failing culvert system, the works will actively help to reduce upstream flood risk and will allow the RSPB to better manage the reserve and meet their objectives set out in the Country Stewardship Agreement by Natural England.
Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for Highways, Travel and Environment Cllr Ray Bryan, said: “Our essential maintenance to replace the current failing structure with a new single span bridge, will improve the safety of the area while supporting the RSPB.
“We appreciate your patience during this time while essential maintenance work is carried out.”
Since FPS numbered with letters and numbers are not on os maps a better description of which path is being closed would be more helpful. A map!
Hi Dave,
We are currently working on an image to show the closure and alternative route and will update this page shortly.

As this is also a cycle path, it would be great if the whole path was made a bit more smooth and bike friendly in the tidying up process. This might also discourage those who continually, that is several most days, refuse to pick up their dog poo. There seems to be an opinion that if it is just to the side where it is a bit more rough, it’s okay not to pick it up. Thank you.
I agree with you Gail. Please make the path smoother – it’s not very nice cycling along it especially in the dark. We need to encourage people to be more active and this path is no good for road bikes.
I may be mistaken, but I am pretty sure when I looked at the site notice at the location of the proposed works the other day it said the path would be closed for 26 weeks, because it made me wonder what was going to be done that would take so long
Well, the map shows an alternative route from A to B, albeit rather longer! However, I use the route as a circular walk so the “alternative” means walk 90% then turn round.
