Summary of Dorset Council’s Cabinet agenda – 1 October 2019

The reports for next week’s Dorset Council Cabinet meeting are now online. On Tuesday (1 October) councillors will discuss a number of issues, including:
Tackling Climate Change
Councillors will receive an update on the work being done in Dorset to tackle Climate Change. The Climate Change Executive Advisory Panel met on Friday 13 September to listen to members from Extinction Rebellion and discuss the council’s progress with their plans to tackle climate change. Local Government Ombudsman report into special educational needs & disabilities (SEND) provision
The Cabinet will discuss the recent findings of the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman into SEND complaints in Dorset. A report was published after an investigation found that Dorset County Council had failed to provide suitable provision for a child with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Councillors will discuss the findings and what the council is doing to rectify its mistakes and improve the service. We publicised the report earlier this month. Read more.

Council Tax exemption for care leavers
Cabinet will be asked to consider agreeing to pay council tax for young people leaving care up to the age of 25, to help them avoid going into debt and running into further problems once they are living on their own. It’s part of a national campaign led by The Children’s Society.

Council Plan
Cabinet will be asked to approve its first Council Plan which will outline Dorset Council’s ambitions and priorities for the next four years. Read more

Neighbourhood Plans
Dorset towns and villages are developing neighbourhood plans giving them influence over development in their local area.
Cabinet will be asked to adopt two neighbourhood plans; for Milborne St Andrew and for Broadwinsor. Once adopted by Dorset Council, they will be used to help with planning application decisions.  Find out more
