This year, Dorset Council is using micro-surfacing on suitable residential roads to preserve more of its network.
Eurovia Surface Treatments will be carrying out the programme of work, which will add a new layer of surface to seal and protect the road.
Mirco-surfacing is another cost-effective treatment for worn, but not structurally failing, roads and adds reinforcement to the existing asphalt.
The treatment is laid over the top of the old surface and helps preserve the road as well as filling in shallow cracks and holes, as well as regulating out dips and bumps in the surface.
Due to the large equipment and number of vehicles used to carry out the work, roads will need to be closed for the treatment to be carried out.
Road will be closed 8am to 4pm with a locally signed diversion route and a gateman posted at the closure to address any queries.
Road surfaces will be swept the day after treatment, with white lines replaced between three and five days after the work.
Locations & Dates
The dates given below are ranges to ensure sufficient time is booked for the road space in case of bad weather. Please look for advance notice signs with specific dates two weeks before the start of work.
Vehicles will need to be moved off the road for the work to be carried out.
Some sites have already had patching work carried out in preparation for micro-surfacing.
Finishing works
Road surfaces will be swept the day after treatment.
White lines will be replaced between three and five days after the work.
Any drain covers that are too low following the surfacing will be raised between three and five days after the work.
This programme of work was paused in March 2020 due to government guidance around COVID-19.
Work to complete this programme has been rescheduled to Spring 2021.

Thank you for all your comments
In most cases, it’s not possible to say when individual roads will be put into one of our works programmes for repair.
We use micro-surfacing, surface dressing, premium surface dressing and resurfacing methods for planned permanent repairs, depending upon the nature of damage to the road. These each have their own programmes of work, equipment and gang.
Many roads will also be ‘patched’ six months to a year before some of these treatments to get them ready.
The way a road makes it into one of these programmes is through inspections by our community highways officers – either routine inspection or following a report by a member of the public.
We know there are many roads in need of repair, however, with a finite amount of money to spend each year, we prioritise the roads – across our entire area – that are most in need. This will take into consideration the classification of road, what level of traffic it carries, skid resistance and safety issues.
What about Dorchester ?
Yes Dorchester. It’s dangerous. I literally have to cycle or drive in the middle of the road at times to avoid damaging the wheels or suspension. The potholes are atrocious. At some point this will cause an accident. especially when people are heading home.
Nothing around Blandford and Shaftesbury way .Some of the back lanes
In villages are becoming very dangerous for cyclists and damaging vehicles . There are some you have to avoid totally.
Not much for council tax payers in North Dorset !!
Gully cleaning seems to be low priority so many roads staying flooded longer .
I agree with Christine 100%. No evidence here that North Dorset taxes are being used to our benefit!
Five minutes after the surface will be back to normal!
Lived in Kingsbere Crescent for 30 years and it’s never been resurfaced. The potholes are filled in, but are soon back bigger than ever. Roads all around were resurfaced, was false economy to omit Kingsbere when the equipment was already nearby.
Agree What about Dorchester!!
Can I suggest that prior to new parking restrictions are introduced on Highfield Road , West Moors , consideration is given to resurfacing the same. Currently the road resembles a patchwork quilt !
Agree What about Dorchester
What about the road in Winfrith Newburgh?
The roads in Hazelbury Bryan are in need of this repair due to use by
heavy vehicles servicing the Hunts depot and other agricultural vehicles these include
The Causeway
Partway Lane
Water Knapp
Frizzells Hill
Back Lane
What about WEST STREET? This is a very busy town centre road in poor condition and exceedingly noisy. It is not very long and would give the residents who live close to the road relief form the roar.
What about Phelipps Road
Corfe Mullen
When are the lanes and C roads in Sherborne rural areas scheduled to be resurfaced? Specifically in Chetnole.
What about the New Forest area?
I’m fairly sure the New Forest falls under Hampshire..?
Great work BUT what about Portman Road in Pimperne !
This road is dreadful, potholes rough road edges (not good for cyclist).
Come and have a look.
Kind Regards
Martin
Why has Wareham been omitted from your list from this essential long over due work ?
What about Fitzpain Road, West Parley which cracks up every Winter?
The main road is being done, but they seem to be missing out the close completely which is full of dips, so we’ll have to put up with all of the disruption without gaining any of the benefits of a better road surface!!??
When will Trinity Way to Lee Lane be repaired? On the last list we understood it to be re-surfaced with Village Road, Bradpole.
The listed roads are, I agree in need of remedial work, but Weyview crescent in Weymouth is long overdue for re-surfacing, from its junction with Dorchester Road for approximately 100 metres where many patches have lifted, exposing the original surface.
Poor old Christchurch not featuring again!
Christchurch is no longer under the care of Dorset Council – refer to BCP council.
Have you ever heard of Ferndown and looked at the awful road surfaces.?
As usual West Dorset gets preferential treatment hardly any road work done in East Dorset
I live in a village in West Dorset and must disagree with you – I’ve never seen any improvements here since being here in 2003. Pitiful and dangerous.
I also live in a village in West Dorset, where the only work ever done is either filling in potholes – which, because there are so many aquifers, promptly reappear – or this awful microsurfacing which is worse than useless because it makes people think the roads are safer when they aren’t. The only way to deal with these former country lanes, never built for cars, is to dig them up and rebuild them properly; this is admittedly difficult as many of them frequently transform into streams!
I agree Ferndown and West Parley should be top of the list, wider roads have been resurfaced but not smaller ones
What about Fleet Street Beaminster
Still nothing planned for Victoria Gardens Ferndown. Surprise Surprise !
What about Middlefield? Its like the rocky road to Dublin..
O.k if you are carrying a bottle of Milk and want a Milkshake.
Apparently , Lytchett Matravers is a ‘ core village please tell me when any of its lanes were last resurfaced?
What about Grosvenor Road and Ivy Cross (A350) in Shaftesbury? The surface of this heavily used road is in very poor condition and has not been resurfaced for over 20 years.
What about West Moors, Pinehurst Road is awful since they dug up the Road, as is Heathfield Road; the road is so uneven, you feel like you are on a roller coaster. Heatherdown Road, has hardly any surface on it at all, yet when you are contacted, we get told it’s not bad enough. Try driving along them every day.
Could you consider Micro-surfacing Heathlands Avenue and Fitzpain Road as these 2 roads suffered damage by the weather in 2018, other roads in the area have been resurfaced but we seem to have been missed I live in Heathlands Avenue.
Still no sign of Heathlands Avenue West Parley being on the list
I repeat the comment above: what about Dorchester?
What about the top few yards of South Street in Bridport.
It’s absolutely bone shaking.
Glad to hear that work is being done but you should consider Bryn Rd and Adjoining roads in Sandford BH207AY
Absolutely dreadful! Please help
What about High Street Winfrith Newburgh? This road is in a terrible state. Holes, depressions, cracks, poor drainage, worn painted signage.
Money was wasted in the summer by surface-dressing the A352 which wasn’t too bad but is now showing signs of loss of surface at several points
Vicarage Lane in Charminster is in a very bad state full of broken surface and pot holes is it on any schedule to be resurfaced?
I would suggest that Shipton lane in burton bradstock should be done as it not only serves as a road but as a footpath
Forest View Drive has not been resurfaced in anyway or form since it was first laid in 1967/8 and is a patch work of inconsistent repairs.Resident Dec. 1966.
Very happy to see your vehicles in Burton Street in Marnhull this morning, only puzzled the work is not included in your schedule above.
Keep up the good work.
How about East Dorset – only Verwood named – I can name many roads in St Ives, Ashley Heath and St Leonards that our badly in need of repair.
Could you please inform residents in Swanage what dates on what roads are being done on what day so vehicle s can be moved.
Many thanks
Due to up and coming roadworks in Swanage Could you please publish on what date on what roads in Swanage are roadworks commencing.. On that particular road, so residents can move vehicles.
Many thanks.
What about Sturminster Newton? We need some remedial work too
Many of the service roads in Ashley Heath are in very poor condition e.g Ashley Drive West, Ashley Drive North, Ashley Drive South. When will these be addressed?
What about Bridleway in Colehill Wimborne, the road entry at the bottom of Middlehill Road is in a shocking state and has been for some years.
Waste of time commenting. No-one ever replies. WHAT ABOUT FITZPAIN CLOSE? THAT’S BH22 8SE. MAXIMUM NUISANCE TO FITZPAIN CLOSE; ALL THE BENEFIT GOING TO FITZPAIN ROAD
Wimborne road East is so noisy I can hear it at night when the lorries thunder along. The rendering on my bungalow has started to develope cracks. Please think about resurfacing, and dropping the speed limit.
It looks like another cheap job similar to what was done to our footpaths. I hope it doesn’t wash away as the coating has on the footpaths
How about Lincleith Road, Wool? The surface simply gets worse and worse, it may be a minor road but it gets plenty of heavy traffic,i.e.school buses.
PS Northmoor Road, where I live, is fine, no complaints, but I use Lincleith Road regularly.
Think you need a much more comprehensive list of roads which have been neglected and need this resurfacing. The roads on Highland Park estate in Wimborne badly need doing before they get worse.
What about Lynmoor Road, Weymouth, DT4 7TW. Its an absolute disgrace and has been for years. It was top of the list at one time – so what’s happening?
Leigh park estate again missed out of any improvements as wimborne has if you dont complain nothing gets repaired same as if you complain.
What about Spetisbury High Street – other villages along the A350 have had their surfaces done, but why omit ours – full of pot-holes and humps and bumps – and its the main road to and from the Poole Ferries for very heavy vehicles.
Hayes lane in Wimborne is in a very bad way. Not helped by many using it as a cut through! Lorries, vans and cars. It is no longer safe to ride a bike down.
Also the numerous times it has been dug up by contractors for cable and pipe laying.
Why is North Dorset left out, the lanes around the villages between Blandford and Shaftesbury and surrounding area are in a sorry state making it very dangerous for cyclists and damaging vehicles. Also gully clearing seems less of a priority leaving some roads under water for long periods adding to the road damage .
Our council tax bills are just as high as the rest of the county .
Furzehill has so many sunken trenches in the first 400 yards from the Cranborne Road junction that I have suffered five headlight bulbs breakages whilst motoring along slowly over the past 13 years. The sub-base has been breached by numerous utility trenches across the road, the cambers are all wrong, and a deep double gouge 350 yards east of The Stocks resembles two tram tracks that would pitch a pedal cyclist off his bike. This was caused by a local farmer whose heavily laden trailer broke it’s draw bar and dug deeply into the road surface for 75 feet before stopping. (reported to you by local Parish Councilor last year). The road surface is so polished that when I rested on my hand on the surface in dry weather – my hand shot away from me as if it was ice!
Wallpapering over the cracks by tar and chippings is NOT at all satisfactory for such a busy ‘minor’ road with several thousand vehicles per day including at least six 44 x tonne artics!
The road must be completely re-profiled.

The micro surfacing technique causes a significant increase in road noise. What can be done to the mix of materials to reduce this?
