Dorset residents can continue to access the Somerley Household and Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) at Verwood Road free of charge without needing to register their vehicle.
We would like to reassure residents that they can continue to use Somerley HRC free of charge following an agreement between Dorset Council and Hampshire County Council (HCC). Residents do not need to register their vehicle or take further action.
In November last year Dorset Council reached an agreement with HCC to allow Dorset residents continued free access to the Somerley site. This arrangement is in place for the foreseeable future.
You can find out more information at Hampshire County Council’s website

Re use of Somerley tip by Dorset residents for free from April 2020.
Dorset Council website states ” see Hampshire website ” and Hampshire website says ” see Dorset website “. When will we get clarity of info on this subject?
Separate arrangements have been made for Dorset Council residents to register for continued free access to Somerley HWRC. Details of how to register will be available via Dorset Council website by Spring 2020.
i am a dorset resident who has always used somely tip for many years
i live very near the the tip
could you please send me details on how to register and to fill out the form so i can use somelythanking you
As stated in the headline of the article, you do not need to register your vehicle Samantha. However, HCC are about to introduce a slot booking system – you can details at https://www.hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling/recyclingcentres/hwrcfinder/Somerley
But not yet and these arrangement are not permanent.
Line 12 of this website says “We would like to reassure (Dorset) residents that they can continue to use Somerley HRC free of charge following an agreement between Dorset Council and Hampshire County Council. Residents to not need to register their vehicle or take further action.”
Pretty clear, I’d say.
Until you read Dorset County Council’s reply dated 3 March 2020 to Ray Warne (above) which says “Details of how to register will be available via Dorset Council website by Spring 2020”.
No wonder Mr Warne is confused. I am, too. Please clarify.
Do I need to register my car to use the Somerley HWRC
Alderholt resident
Either you do need to register or you don’t – which is it?
It looks as though there is a possibility that recycling centres may re-open some time soon. I live in Dorset – do I need to register to use Somerley or not? I did ask the Parish Council about this before we went into lockdown but still haven’t had a reply.
No. Dorset residents will be able to access the Somerley site without registration, although this will change in the future.
Perhaps Toni Coombs and Spencer Flower, both Verwood Dorset Councillors would like to sort out this whole sorry episode especially as he is Dorset Council Leader!
Sorry Phil, but we don’t know which “sorry episode” you are referring to. Free access to Somerley has been secured for Dorset residents for the foreseeable future. Any registration system introduced by Hampshire won’t require payment from Dorset residents.
Hello to you All
As a Dorset resident close to the border with Hampshire I have been following the implementation of the system to book a slot to use Somerley HWRC with interest.
It was initially meant to start on 8th June but that was put back until 15th June. My understanding is that the system went live on Saturday 13th June to enable booking 2 days in advance.
I couldn’t access any slots at all – let alone 2 days in advance – yet I was at my computer all day Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th.
I know that I shouldn’t be that surprised that all the slots were taken. I’ll stay up late tonight and try and log in to the booking system at 00.01 on Tuesday morning.
I would be interested to read the experience of other Dorset residents who have tried to book a slot – either successfully of unsuccessfully.
If I’m not able to get one soon then I’ll have to drive a lot further and go to Wimborne HWRC.
I had a similar problem not being able to find a slot on the computer system, but lo when I phoned them a slot was instantly available, so I suggest you phone rather than rely on the computer system
Went to the Somerly waste site today. The Somerly waste site is now restricting ALL entry to unregistered cars. Even those from East Dorset. See note on the HCC website below.
Separate arrangements have been made for Dorset Council residents to register for continued free access to Somerley HWRC. Details of how to register will be available via Dorset Council website. If you have any queries please contact Dorset Council.
How do we register our cars for use with the Somerly site we have paid to use?
I have some kitchen unit and floor covering, Lino to get rid of, please can you tell me if I can take it to Verwood recycling centre and not be charged? The units are wood, also an wooden pantry door. I only have a small cat, fiat 500, if I can borrow a vehicle or trailer, will I be charged?
Hello Cristina – We don’t operate the Somerley recycling centre, we just ensure Dorset residents can access it. Best have a look at https://www.hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling/recyclingcentres/hwrcfinder/Somerley – James
