Town enhancement work progresses

Work on Institute Road in Swanage is going well, with the first phase almost complete.

Western pavement almost finished

By Tuesday 24 March, construction work to improve the western pavement will be finished – with the path widened and raised to a higher level, new kerbs and new drainage.

The final surface layer of the pavement will be laid by specialists Rhino UK, where the surface will be imprinted – giving the appearance of paving slabs but without the maintenance issues and costs. The crossing points over the road will also be highlighted using a smaller briquette imprint.

Unfortunately, this pavement cannot be fully reopened while it remains unfinished.

Meanwhile, work has started outside Wimpy on the eastern (beach side) pavement and is working towards High Street.

The gang on site is continuing to keep as much space for pedestrians as possible and all shops can still be accessed – they are working hard to get the area reopen for the Easter period.

Traffic management

Stafford Road has temporarily been made one-way to improve the flow of traffic around the Institute Road closure. Please adhere to this and help all drivers get about more easily.

Thank you for your patience during this time.

Remind me, what’s this all about?

The Institute Road scheme aims to improve pedestrian safety and enhance the street scene.

By widening pavements, raising them to full height and removing the loading bay, the work will eradicate long-running safety concerns of heavy vehicles mounting busy pavements to pass parked vehicles.

The work is costing around £450,000 and is being funded by Dorset Council, Swanage Town Council and Section 106 money from developers.
