Changes to marriage and civil partnership ceremonies

Dorset Council has made the very difficult decision to introduce restrictions to the number of people present at marriage and civil partnership ceremonies.  Following public health advice from central government and in the light of the decision by the Church of England last week, we will now be limiting attendance to the couple and two witnesses, along with the two registrars required by law.

This is a temporary measure and will apply to ceremonies due to take place between 25 March and 31 May 2020.  The position will of course be kept under review as government advice is received.

We are aware that this may have a significant impact on many of our couples and will also be hugely disappointed.  This is not a decision that the council has taken lightly.  We will be contacting everyone, including our local venues, who will be affected by this decision.  All couples will be given the option to postpone their wedding ceremony to a later date, free of charge.

If you are personally affected by this decision, Registration Services will contact you direct.  However, you can email registrars@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk or call 01305 225153 if you wish to discuss your options.
