Local residents are invited to have their say on a plan reflecting the community’s vision for Chickerell.
The Chickerell Neighbourhood Plan sets out a range of planning policies. It has been prepared by the Town Council.
The plan seeks to balance protecting areas of landscape and wildlife interest with increasing the range of local facilities to cater for a growing and ageing population. Those facilities include a health centre, a second primary school, enhanced retail provision, sport and play facilities, and more readily accessible green spaces. The plan includes twelve policies which when adopted will have to be taken into account when deciding planning applications in the area.
The Plan is now available for viewing and public comment. Dorset Council is responsible for arranging the plan to be independently examined – a requirement before the plan can go on to referendum, and all being well, adopted.
View the plan, supporting documents, and response form.
Hard copies can also be accessed from Chickerell Community Library, East Street, Chickerell, DT3 4DT. Current opening hours are limited to 10am to 12pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
All comments must be received by Friday 16 October 2020. These comments will be sent to the appointed examiner along with the plan. Depending on the examiner’s report, a referendum will be held for the residents of Chickerell to decide whether the plan should be adopted. It should be noted that, due to Covid-19 restrictions, all referendums are currently postponed until 6 May 2021.
Cllr David Walsh, Portfolio Holder for Planning at Dorset Council, said:
“It is good news that the Chickerell Neighbourhood Plan has been submitted to Dorset Council.
“The submitted plan is the result of volunteers putting in a lot of time and energy to producing a plan that will hopefully meet the needs of their community. I would encourage anyone with an interest in the future of Chickerell to view the submitted plan and consider making comments.”
We are currently compiling a petition regarding lack of facilities for the ever growing population of families in Chickerell, one park which is quite often full of children waiting to use the equipment is not good enough, CG Fry who were granted permission to build these developments should of had certain stipulation in place regarding facilities for the increase in population but yet again these important issues seem to get swept under the table as an afterthought, it seems a concrete skatepark which is proving a very popular idea would be an ideal low maintenance cost effective idea whilst also reducing carbon footprint of chickerell residents to travel to other facilties such as, Portland,Weymouth,Wyke Regis and Dorchester.

Yet another Chickerell draft plan, I have kept them since the nineties , very few suggested improvements have taken place. We now have a town with little infrastructure the town centre has just one crumbling pavement, no traffic control and the area is surrounded by hundreds of expensive houses that most of the local people would be unable to afford. Why do we need another expensive draft plan unless we are going to have a new medical practice and all the other advantages a TOWN should have.
