Update on schools – Managing Coronavirus

Dorset Council is working closely with Public Health Dorset and all schools to safely manage any Coronavirus cases that occur. All schools, colleges and education settings are following Dorset Council, Department for Education and Public Health guidance. Risk assessments have been carried out and hygiene measures are in place. Plans have been prepared to make sure any incidents are dealt with promptly and safely.

Everyone can help by following the guidance.  You must self-isolate and get tested if you have symptoms of Coronavirus, such as a high temperature, new continuous cough or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste. Testing is now available for students in year seven and over, staff and households with children at school or college, who do not have symptoms, read the Public Health guidance about accessing it. Primary school pupils will not take asymptomatic tests but families should book a PCR test online if they develop symptoms.

If your child is unwell and you are not sure what to do, have a look at this symptom checker.

Schools with Confirmed Coronavirus cases

Sam Crowe, Director of Public Health for Dorset and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Councils said: “We are aware that a number of schools in Dorset have received confirmed cases of COVID-19. These schools are working closely with Public Health Dorset, Dorset Council and Public Health England South West to ensure that all necessary measures are being met.

“All close contacts of the confirmed cases have been notified and need to self-isolate for 10 days. Contacts of the confirmed cases should get tested if they go on to develop symptoms. Even if people test negative, they must still self-isolate for 10 days.”

The following schools have confirmed Coronavirus a case or cases and are following the appropriate steps to ensure the safety of their pupils:

  • Thomas Hardye School, Dorchester – 18 June (cases)
  • Atlantic Academy, Portland 16 June (case)
  • The Purbeck School – 15 June (case)
  • St. James’ CE First School, Gaunts Common – 10 June (case)
  • The Woodroffe School, Lyme Regis – 8 June (case)
  • Bovington Academy – 6 June (case)

  1. Please supply details of infections in the DT2 area so I will be able to assess if I should adjust my behaviour. At present I believe there are none and I am not self-isolating.
    I am a 77 year old male.

I have previously requested this information. The information currently available from you largely comprises platitudes and generalisations..

      1. I look after elderly parents one with heart issues one with leukaemia, my daughter is immune deficient and I am asthmatic.. Covid is creeping around schools and eventually will get to my daughters. I’m scared . We follow the rules and quite happy to do so. I’m not happy if my daughter goes to school and becomes ill . We are all high risk..what do we do..

No one can say it’s ok

      2. Seems ridiculous that I’ve been told to isolate since March. Due to 42% lung function and severe fungus on my lungs. Im 60 years of age

Yet here I am still home alone imprisoned and made to feel its too scary to go out.

Yet I’ve been put in Group 4 for Vaccine. Told I am clinically extremely vunerable. Had many letters of advise of the not so brilliant Matt Hancock.

The vaccine is based on age. So because I’m 60 and clearly in need of vaccine as unwell compared tp a lot of are young staff and people in their 70s that are fit and healthy .

This is so unfair. Being made to wait for the vaccine while young untrained HSA workers get the vaccine. If elderly get vaccine then they are protected from carers.

Really disappointed with this stupid system !!!!!

        1. I am in the same situation – stage 3 cancer and COPD. Using patient transport for infusions in chemo unit – 43 mins each way. Patient transport – no screens unless very, very lucky to get a large vehicle. Patients and drivers completely unprotected. I had a no-screen journey home in a car today. In chemo unit next Wednesday (not tested beforehand). If I’ve caught it, Wednesday will be day 5 – day most likely to display symptoms. Treatment is in a communal setting. Just let that sink in with the new variant. I have raised this with my MP, my GP, Macmillan Cancer Support, PALS (because hospital staff seem to think it’s OK for patients to share transport as well). Cannot get vaccine for love nor money. The CEV are being failed at every corner. I am shielding. Guess what? 24-year-old, healthy daughter had the jab last December – because she works in a care home.

        2. I know of someone who is severely asthmatic and has been admitted to hospital many times, they are in they’re twenties. they have had their first injection in Bridport, perhaps it’s your surgery, I understand dorchester surgeries have been very slow to start vaccinating. Why don’t you go on the government website and put your nhs number in to see if you can book yourself a test before you are called by surgery or receive a letter from government, that’s what a friend in their 70s did and they got an appointment in Yeovil. Your medical issues would surely be picked up with your nhs number?

  2. There was also a case we have been told at Manor park school too. Then we later find out that evening the child is at 1610 doing swimming lessons with all the other 6 children and the swimming pool we belive haven’t been told we know this because of other parents seent the child swimming. Is it safe to go to the pool still as my daughter is supposed to be having lessons tonight

    1. If there are cases in schools then all close contacts of the confirmed case are notified and advised to self-isolate for 14-days. Best wishes, Kate

      1. why is it ‘advised’ to self isolate, surely they should have to, not a strong enough message

  3. I think this information should be more public, ie, we shouldn’t have to find this out through other parents.. local news, just an update of the facts would help stop panicking

    1. Thanks for your comment, we give schools time to notify parents and carers directly first, and then we post an update. Best wishes, Kate

  4. Could you include a section in the general report indicating how many people have been hospitalized with the virus.

  5. Will cases in schools this week be added to the site? New cases at DMS, Thomas Hardye and Prince of Wales Pre School have not been updated…

    1. Apologies, we try and update this site as soon as possible, but we have to make sure Parents and Carers are informed by the school first. Thanks Kate

  6. Surely given the number of cases in Dorset schools it would have been sensible to either extend the half term to two weeks, or to avoid risks to the wider community, to keep the children in school totally by cancelling the holiday thereby keeping track of their whereabouts? Planning a bit behind the rise in cases locally.

  7. This site is obviously not updated regularly enough. I know of at least one school, not shown here which had a positive case last week and children in the class have been self isolating. Please be transparent and let us know all the data.

  8. Please explain

All schools in Tier 4 London are now closed from Jan 4th

Schools in Bournemouth , also Tier 4, are open from Jan 4th. The logic in this please ?

  9. Can a school keep staff in post if they have a child testing positive and use the lateral flow test to check the teachers in the bubble are negative , so they don’t have to isolate for 10 days?

  10. Why are you not updating the list of schools with a confirmed positive covid case? Allenbourn Middle has one and I believe QE has one?
