Bookings are being taken for a free virtual workshop with poet Vanessa Kisuule which takes place on Wednesday 25 November.

The online workshop will give participants from all over Dorset the opportunity to express their thoughts about climate change and its impact on them and the wider community. This could be through single words, sentences or a short poem.

Registration for the event can take place online or by phone, and attendees will be invited to contribute their words during the workshop or by email after the session.

Their contributions will inspire a group piece which Vanessa will perform and share online later.

The event is being run by Dorset Library Service, project partners of Landance. It is the first of further workshops and a free live performance of music, dance and poetry planned for late summer 2021 on the Lyme Regis seafront.

To register for the spoken word workshop, go to Eventbrite or search for ‘Dorset libraries’ in events at www.eventbrite.co.uk. Alternatively, call 01305 225000 to book a place at the workshop.

Councillor Jill Haynes, Portfolio Holder for Customer and Community Services, said: “Climate change is important to all of us and this workshop gives an opportunity to express how we feel about its impact, both on ourselves and our local communities.

“Vanessa will bring the words to life through her performance, so it is promising to be a powerful workshop.”

“Dorset’s libraries have hosted a wealth of online activities this year, enabling people to share ideas, learn something new and have fun and we are looking forward to this event.”

Dorset Council is currently inviting people to take part in their consultation about its recently published draft Climate and Ecological Emergency Strategy. Whilst the event is not part of the consultation, it will provide people with the opportunity to think creatively about climate change.

The strategy presents eight key areas for action to ensure that the Council’s services and estate become carbon neutral (i.e. they save more carbon than they produce) by 2040, and across the whole Dorset Council area by 2050.
