Yule log-on with the help of Dorset Council this Christmas

Dorset’s residents are being urged to help friends and loved ones get online as the country prepares for its first ‘digital Christmas’.

Tier 2 Covid-19 restrictions and limited Christmas bubbles will see more people than ever turn to the digital world to help them celebrate the festive season.

However, in Dorset, it’s estimated that as many as 150,000 people lack basic digital skills.

In the run-up to Christmas Dorset Council will be promoting not only how digital can help festivities go with a swing but also highlight the help that’s available in getting people online.

Dorset Council's Digital Champions are ready to help get people prepared for a Digital Christmas. The volunteers man the free Digital Hotline, open every weekday from 10am to midday.

Deputy leader, Cllr Peter Wharf, said: “There is much talk of this being the first digital Christmas as most of us will have to connect with family and shop online at some point this year.

“We not only want to highlight what local services can be accessed online but also help more people than ever make the most of the digital world. We don’t want anyone being left behind.”

Dorset Council runs a free Digital Hotline to help people with any digital enquiry or problem and boost their IT skills.

Manned by Digital Champions, the hotline volunteers can answer a whole range of questions – from how to search for the perfect Turkey recipe to buying Christmas gifts online; and from how to attend virtual carol services to arranging Zoom party games with the family.

As well as helping with the fun side of Christmas, the digital world can also provide an important signpost for services.

Over the coming weeks, the council will be highlighting online contact points for local volunteer groups, food banks, emergency shelter and support groups.

The internet also provides a lot of useful information and guidance for people that are struggling financially or emotionally.

Local community project Help and Kindness, which was set up to help people find local help and support across Dorset, and has been working to support people through the Coronavirus crisis, has created a one-stop online portal listing Dorset support services available this Christmas.

Cllr Wharf added: “Christmas is a wonderful time, but it can also be one of the most challenging times of the year for many people – and no more so than this year.

“The internet has opened up a world where you can find support and advice in an instant.

“If you know a neighbour, a friend or relative that is still unsure about doing anything online do tell them about our Digital Hotline, it’s never too late to learn these valuable skills.”

Dorset Council’s Digital Hotline – 01305 221048 – is open 10am to midday every weekday (except Bank Holidays).
