Dorset Road Fix – resurfacing October 2021

Dorset Highways maintenance gangs are out across the county continuing to repair road damage.

To allow this work to take place safely, the area of the road being worked on will be closed. Daytime road closures are 9am to 4pm and night work is usually from 8pm to 6am.

We will do our best to keep you updated if our schedule of work changes. In October we will be repairing sections along the following roads:

B3072 Manor Road, Verwood – 1 Nov to 6 Nov

This is not an exhaustive list of all roads being repaired. Dorset Highways’ annual road maintenance programme, includes patching, micro-surfacing, surface dressing, in-situ recycling, road preservation and resurfacing treatments.

Using a variety of surface treatments ensures that more of Dorset Council’s roads get repaired with the budget available, compared to using resurfacing alone.

All planned road works can be found online.

Please use our online form to report road-related issues/damage. This goes directly to the local community highways officer for assessment.

  1. All the roads into Thorncombe are in poor condition and the lack of hedge trimming is making travel difficult and dangerous

  2. Is the stretch of road between – the new estate entrance on Wimborne Road – past the garage at the bottom of Hayes Lane -being made good; it is very rough and lanes not clearly marked?
Also the turning into Hayes Lane from Wimborne is very difficult the corner is too square surely it should be rounded off; it’s quite tight to avoid traffic coming down Hayes Lane and for turning into the garage!!!

  3. Being a resident on the A350 Spetisbury, after a long wait at last this road will be repaired. My joy is somewhat limited because from the white paint marks on the road, the repair falls short, by a few yards, of one of the worst surface damage examples. It is just south of the speed camera, where the road surface is furrowed by heavy vehicles. It is a dangerous trip hazard and safety issue; when crossing the road and looking out for traffic, you cannot look at your feet as well. Is it possible to deal with this at the same time?

    1. I just discovered the road through Spetisbury is only close during the night. Today a notice at 2.30pm said ROAD CLOSED. This caused me to get lost cross country and miss an important hospital appointment. Did someone forget to remove it?

      1. Hi Gill Hart, I’m so sorry to hear this. Yes, the signs should be turned over when the road closure is not in operation and removed when work is finished. I’ve reported this instance to the site agent so that the workforce can be reminded.

    2. Hi anthony parker, we’re aware that a longer section of road is in need of reconstruction, but SGN have gas repair works planned for this area and are very likely to dig this section of carriageway up within the year.
It was felt that resurfacing this section now would not be the most effective use of resource.

  4. I have recently become a mobility scooter user, because I have suffered a rapid and serious loss of my mobility.
I have quickly discovered that riding on my scooter on the pavements in Dorchester is an unpleasantly bumpy business. This is because of the dreadful condition of most of the pavement surfaces, mainly because of very poor quality re-surfacing of works which involved digging through the surface.
Of course, mobility scooter users are a minority, albeit – it seems – a growing one in Dorchester.
I do hope the interests of minority users are not ignored by the Highways Department.
Any chance that some funds can be diverted to a programme of worthwhile improvement of the quality of the town’s pavement surfaces?

    1. As a mobility scooter user of many years I support these views that Dorchester pavements are difficult to use. Some years ago there was a programme of Works which greatly improved pavement crossing points which helped a lot. Also the Works to the bottom end of South Street which is very mobility friendly are to be applauded. “A” board shop signs seem to have multiplied uncontrolled and this can make life difficult. Increasing numbers of scooter users behave irresponsibly and drive large scooters at around 8mph instead of the permitted 4mph. Time I think for driver licensing and testing.

    2. Hi Mr T.J.R. Bullick, we’ve recently started a programme of footway maintenance in Dorchester which will stop over the winter months, but continue in the spring.

We have also secured funding to improve the footway on Weymouth Avenue, outside of the market area, which will start soon.

You can report any particular areas of concern through our online reporting tool: https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/roads-highways-maintenance/report-a-problem-on-the-road-or-pavement which will be passed to the local highways officer to investigate.

  5. Westwood Avenue still remains in a very bad state of repair !!! Even more amazing is that a cul-de-sac off this road was given a complete repair !!!

  6. Bimport High Street 24 hr closure for several days. Does that mean Bimport, or the High Street? If the former, how will residents be able to exit? We can hardly go along St James’ on a regular basis.

    1. Hi Deborah, sorry for the confusion. I’ve checked our online roadworks map and it is a section of High Street that is closed, between Bimport and Bell Street. I’ll amend the list now for others. Thanks.

  7. Lynmoor Road, Weymouth, DT4 7TW is in an appalling state and has been for years. Resurfacing has been promised for years and still nothing happens, why not?

    1. Hi Roger, we use annual road inspections and surveys to assess road condition across the whole council area. This helps us grade each road based on the type of damage evidenced (cracking, potholes, patching & subsidence) so that our programmes of work can prioritise the roads most in need of repair.
The best thing is to continue to report road damage using our online form: https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/roads-highways-maintenance/report-a-problem-on-the-road-or-pavement.aspx to help further inform roads for prioritisation.

  8. When will the B3165 through Marshwood be repaired, especially the section from the 30mph sign near Lambert’s Hill, going past the Bottle Inn & into the narrow stretch?

    1. Hi Mrs L Sandford, I’ve had a quick look and I’m pleased to report back that the B3165 is scheduled for resurfacing between Mutton Street To Hawkmoor Hill in mid-November.

  9. West St Chickerell is a narrow road leading from the town centre to the b3157. It has no pavements at all and a speed restriction of 30 mph ,no safe means of pedestrian access exists. I have written to local and county councils but remain largely ignored. This is an accident waiting to happen area.

  10. What happened to the resurfacing of Horton Road scheduled for 4 nights, but ended up only a few hours and no real work carried out

  11. Bit strange that major work on the north side of the harbour in Weymouth didn’t get a mention. Instead, a TWEET was apparently used to make the announcement of closures from tomorrow. Totally chaotic, thanks.

  12. I have been thinking for some time about the Leigh Rd redevelopment
and having found no one who uses the road likes it ! I feel the whole
project is a complete waste of taxpayers money
