Dorset Council Local Plan comments are published

The comments that were received during the first consultation of the Draft Dorset Council Local Plan have been published on the council’s website.

The first consultation of the draft Dorset Council Local Plan was carried out between January and March this year. Around 9,000 respondents took part during that time. These comments are all being considered alongside the plan and national planning policy to provide Dorset residents with the accommodation, employment and facilities that they will need over the next 17 years. This includes the need to provide housing for people who cannot afford to buy or rent from the housing market.

The Dorset Council Local Plan outlines the strategy for ensuring the growth that the area needs, happens in the right places. And that it is of the right character and quality, while protecting Dorset’s natural environment and acting on climate change. It also ensures that the right level of community services is provided, including schools, as well as retail, leisure and other community facilities.

Cllr David Walsh, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Planning, said:

“We continue to work on the policies that underpin the plan. This includes research and gathering information to make sure the plan delivers what it needs to for Dorset’s next generations.

“I am very proud of the work the team is doing. We have had representation from across the  Dorset Council area. There will be a further chance to comment upon the plan before it is voted on by our full council next year.”

Work continues to develop policies for local housing need, the self-build register and to find ways of helping us to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.

  1. What is the council doing to reduce the cost of council tax. Being the 2nd highest charge in England shows it is wasting money somewhere.
It cannot justify any staff earning more than our Prime Minister, who has a much more responsible role.
Just because other còuncils pay more is not a good reason.
When East Dorset was taken over by Dorset, they gained millions of £s that EDDC had saved, but all being spent now on wasted wide cycle lanes which few cyclists use.

    1. Hi Anthony – Can I correct you on the assumption that we used council tax money on cycle lanes? These were totally funded by national Government’s transforming cities fund. The funds that we bid for to national Government can only be spent on that project or scheme. National Government no longer funds local councils on an annual basis so to raise funds for essential services we rely on council tax, local income generation and funding for specific projects. We are looking to look for ways to safe money be releasing ourselves from property leases and selling buildings that are no longer needed. But with an aging population Dorset has a very high Social care bill. There there is more information about this at https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/council-tax/council-tax. Fiona

      1. Dear Sir or Madam.
Do you think we are completely unaware that all Govt is funded by the taxpayers.
Try listening to our priorities, not your own. And please take a little less notice of the shrill special interest groups, that seem to command you attention.

    2. Sorry, I cannot find thè comments you received during the consultation. Would we please clearly signpost in the local plan website. It is important as you well know the public/residents should easily access such sites.

When does the council will publish its responses to the comments it received?

      Many thanks

        1. When has/will the council publish its responses to the comments it received?
          Many thanks

          1. Hi Sam – We asked for comments – they have come in as a response to the draft local plan. They will be considered alongside planning policy, the plan and other info gathered from a range of experts. The ‘response’ to all the comments will come in the form of an amended local plan which will then be open for further consultation. You can see the timeline we are working to at https://www.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/planning-buildings-land/planning-policy/dorset-council-local-plan/key-stages-of-the-plan. I hope that has clarified the situation. Fiona
