Work along Custom House Quay is continuing – with the first section of new, wider paving now complete.

Drainage, kerbing and paving activity is still underway but has progressed along the road.
- Custom House Quay is currently closed between Maiden Street and East Street
- there is currently no access from Maiden Street on to Custom House Quay, but this access will reopen as soon as work clears the junction
- East Street access remains open from Custom House Quay, but there is no access from East Street onto Custom House Quay
This wider northern pavement, running adjacent to businesses, will provide more space for pedestrians while sitting out areas are in use – with the hospitality areas positioned next to properties and the walkway alongside the road.

Before the Christmas break, work will also start to install the drainage channel line for the widened harbour side footway in the area of the first two phases of work – and the public realm scheme will start to visually take shape at this western end.
Improvement work started on 4 October and is being carried out in sections, with a rolling road closure to allow construction to take safely take place. It’s currently scheduled that Custom House Quay will reopen for the Christmas period on 12 December and work will return in the New Year from 3 January:
- from 3 January to 5 February, road closed between East Street and South Parade
- from 7 February to 5 March, road closed between South Parade and Pilgrims Way
- from 7 March to 9 April, road closed from Pilgrims Way to Esplanade
Final surfacing of the road will be carried out in March, along with the imprinting works for the carriageway and southern (harbour side) footway.
Access to all businesses and properties is being maintained throughout the work.
Western and Southern Area Planning Committee
On Thursday 4 November, the Traffic Regulation Order was unanimously approved for the scheme, it will:
- create a restricted parking zone between St Mary Street and a point to the east of South Parade
- introduce four new loading bays on Custom House Quay and one in Maiden Street, plus retaining the large loading bay by fish loading platform
- install a disabled bay (two spaces) near fish loading platform
- remove of eleven parking spaces on Custom House Quay to the west of Pilgrims Way
- remove one parking space on the corner of Custom House Quay junction with the Esplanade
The TRO for a contraflow cycle lane was withdrawn from the Custom House Quay proposals as a result of the findings of the consultation.
“Wider pavement for pedestrians”….. or signage! (as in your image).
Nice photo of the completed works outside The Ship, but why is the pub sign blocking the area allocated for pedestrians?
