Bin collections will be on your usual day of the week over the Christmas period

Dorset Council is reminding all residents that their bin collections will be on their usual day of the week over the Christmas period, even on bank holidays.

With Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day falling on the weekend this year, rubbish and recycling collections over the festive period will not be on a different day and everyone should put their bins out on their regular collection day.

Please refer to your calendar or look on the Dorset Council website to check your usual collection days.

There are some other important things to remember about your rubbish and recycling collections over Christmas: –

  • Dorset Council will collect up to two extra sacks of rubbish beside your bin on your first rubbish collection after Christmas Day
  • no garden waste collections will take place between Christmas Day and Monday 10 January
  • household recycling centres will be open from 9am to 4pm daily, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day
  • extra recycling, including glass and food, will be collected on your recycling collection day, provided it has been separated correctly and placed in a suitable sturdy container that can be easily lifted by one person (no bags or cardboard boxes)
  • please help our crews by putting your glass out for collection before This ensures you have as much space as possible in your glass box going into the festive period, helping prevent over spilling containers, and reduces the amount of extra glass we will need to collect after Christmas

Many households produce extra waste over Christmas, but much of it can be recycled using your kerbside Recycle for Dorset service. Remember that you can recycle:

  • cooked and uncooked food, using your food waste bin
  • wrapping paper (not foil or glittery paper, please)
  • cardboard boxes (flattened and broken up, please)
  • cardboard and hard plastic packaging (no polystyrene or thin film)
  • Christmas cards and envelopes

Dorset Council does not collect Christmas trees of any kind with rubbish or recycling at the kerbside. You can recycle your real Christmas tree by:

Cllr Laura Miller, Dorset Council’s Portfolio Holder for Customer and Community Services, said:

“Normally bin collection days are a little different over Christmas, so we wanted to make sure everyone is aware that this year everyone needs to put their bins out on their usual day of the week, even if it’s a bank holiday.

I also want to pass my thanks and best wishes to all the waste services employees who will be working hard over the busy Christmas period. We can all make their jobs a little easier by going into the festive period with empty glass boxes and making sure our waste is separated correctly and put out on the right day.”

  3. Happy Christmas to all. Especially the hard working operatives.
We hope the bins will be emptied but due to lack of drivers we were missed
for the last two collections of recycling material. Many left their overflowing bins in the roads for long periods. The gales blew lots of rubbish over the roads and property. Lets hope all will be well this next collection.

  4. Nice to hear that bin collections around Christmas will be on the usual calendar day. That will be an improvement on current practice where for a second time in succession, our recyclable bin has not been emptied !

  5. To tell the truth, it is so admirable that the bin collections of residents will be on their usual day of the week over the Christmas period, even on bank holidays because it indicates caring about our environment and her condition. Unfortunately, garbage not taken out in time can lead to negative consequences and contribute to street pollution. It is so cool that you demonstrate such a responsible and serious approach to this situation without neglecting rubbish and recycling collections in holidays. From my point of view, any small step and any proper decision can play a significant role, leading to improving our environment and changing our reality for the better.

  6. Great to hear Christmas collections will be on normal collection days. Much easier. Thank you for all the hard work you do !!! Merry Christmas .
