Schools bring the joy of Christmas to older residents

Schools across Weymouth and Portland are bringing seasonal cheer to residents across the area with a video of Christmas readings from their pupils.

Seven schools who are part of the Chesil Reading Project, have recorded their pupils reading Christmassy stories.  These stories are being shared with residents in Dorset to bring some festive cheer – and to support the children to have a love of reading.

The Chesil Reading Project, led by Dorset Council in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, involves schools in Weymouth and Portland that are united in trying to give all children a love of reading.

Councillor Andrew Parry, Dorset Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children, Education, Skills and Early Help, said:

“Children who develop a love of reading are more likely to do well in school, have lower stress levels and go on to enjoy more rewarding careers. Having an audience to listen to them read makes this even more exciting for the children. Of course, we also hope it brings some festive cheer to the people listening to the stories.”
