Magna Housing presented site layout options at a public consultation in January 2019. They received 217 surveys in total. 127 at the events, 16 through the post and 74 online.
Two thirds of respondents were in agreement with the proposal.
Over three quarters (77%) think there should be some community space. They would most like to see a cafe there.
On 5 March, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s Management Committee agreed with the public’s view that scheme 1 was the preferred option for the site.
Significant step forward
Cllr Jeff Cant Leader of the Council and Briefholder for finance and assets, said “Today marks another significant step forward for the future of the North Quay site. Building on the public consultation we have agreed a preferred outline plan. We will continue our work in partnership with Magna Housing to demolish the existing building and bring a mix of 1,2 and 3 bedroom properties with parking and public space. There is also the potential for community facing commercial and retail space.
“I will be very excited to see this project develop under the future direction of Dorset Council. It is the second major phase in our regeneration plan for the town after the successful launch of the Peninsula scheme and discussions about the future of the Commercial Road site continue.”

Providing new, affordable housing
David Aldwinckle, Property Director at Magna Housing, said: “We are pleased that the project is developing to provide new homes for the local community. We will be reviewing the planning guidelines in conjunction with the council and will be proceeding with appropriate applications later this year.
“We are looking forward to consulting further with local people so that we can get their views on what the properties will look like.”
Cllr Gill Taylor, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council Briefholder for Housing said: “We have a real mix of affordable housing, housing for the older generations and shared ownership housing. There will also be some housing available for open market sale which will make a vibrant, balanced mix of housing. We know the area is in desperate need for more houses of all tenure and this scheme is exciting and deliverable.”
The grant from Homes England will help fund the costs of preparing the site for redevelopment.
Hi, why/how has this page and the information on it been updated? I see the published date is now March 6 2023 but the information mentions “2019” and “Weymouth & Portland Borough Council”. Is there anything new/updated in there as I’m struggling to find it?
Thanks
Jason
Hi Jason, I think there is a glitch in our system. The article you are referring to was written by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council in 2015 and should have been hidden from view. I can’t work out why it’s now showing as available to read! Will consult someone with better technological expertise than me! Kirstie
