Statement: Home Office proposal to use Portland Port

Dorset Council and the local MP Richard Drax have been made aware of conversations between the Home Office and the owners of Portland Port to site floating accommodation for asylum seekers in the port.

We have serious concerns about the suitability of the location for this facility.

The council has had limited input and has no decision-making powers on this.

Any media enquiries should be directed to the Home Office and/or Portland Port.

  1. This must have negative effect on the promotion of visits by Cruise Ships to the Portland Ship Terminal and doesn’t seem at all sensible by any reckoning.

  2. Surely, as long as the immigrants are secured on board, there could be an increase in local trade for food and supply outlets locally, possibly more local employment for maintenance firms etc.
I have no problem with the genuine families fleeing. I do object to the thousands of young men (leaving their families behind in their home country) coming here as economic immigrants.
