Dorset Council is currently consulting on several guidance documents on planning for climate change.
These are:
- Interim Guidance and Position Statement on planning for climate change.
- Proposed sustainability checklist.
- New guidance on listed buildings – what you can do for climate change.
These documents, although they are not mandatory, will support:
- Our natural environment, climate and ecology strategy.
- Our decision making until the New Dorset Council Local Plan is adopted.
The documents will bring together legislation, national policy and local planning policy on climate change and will encourage those making planning applications to consider measures for addressing climate change.
As part of this consultation, there is also a proposed amendment to section 39 of the council’s Local List in relation to planning applications.

The closing date for comments is 8 June.
Just a question /comment – how will plans to demolish/reconfigure the old Weymouth Council Offices, North Quay be affected by these ideas ? What has been done to evaluate the effects on the environment if it is demolished, releasing huge amounts of embodied carbon and producing vast quantities of rubble to go to landfill ? Some people regard the building as an eyesore, and it certainly is not improving, but if the environmental harm was understood and an imaginative use were to be found ?
Hi Jennifer – details of the situation with North Quay offices can be found elsewhere on this site. This link will take you to the latest release https://news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/2023/03/30/dorset-council-announces-fresh-planning-application-for-north-quay/ regards Fiona
