New 50mph speed limit at Badbury Rings

To improve safety for all road users, a reduced speed limit of 50mph will be introduced on the B3082 at Badbury Rings.

The decision is a response to serious and fatal injury collisions on this road.

The new speed limit will come into effect on Monday 3 July 2023. It aims to improve safety, including at three junctions which give access to Shapwick, Sturminster Marshall and Badbury Rings.

Cllr Noc Lacey Clarke, Cabinet Lead Member for Highways and Travel, said: “The Badbury Rings road is important for commuters from Blandford to Wimborne and beyond, but sadly there have been serious and fatal collisions.

“By reducing the speed limit, we aim to make this stretch of road safer for all. Nevertheless, we also urge motorists to drive responsibly and according to the conditions of the road, prioritising the safely of themselves and others.”

Classified as a lower class B road, 60mph is no longer appropriate for this section. A public consultation, where people were able to comment on the proposed speed reduction traffic regulation order, took place in February 2023.

  1. 40 MPH would be more than sufficient along this dangerous stretch of road.

People use the road like a race track, over taking on blind summits and with zero consideration given to the dangers caused by the hidden dips and Deer.

    1. Should be 40 mph and enforced otherwise it means nothing.Brownstone way is a safer road and that’s 40.

  2. All of these ancient single carriageway roads should be brought down to 40MPH. There were not intended for use by today’s speed and volume of traffic. We need to protect them so that they can still be used for the benefit of all

  3. There’s little point in having speed limits unless they are continually monitored and enforced.
Nothing wrong with the yellow box camera – always a good deterrent if nothing else.
SIDs work to a certain extent, but once the vehicle is 100m past the SID, speed increases again.
There are far too many rural roads running through settlements where drivers blatantly ignore the speed limits.
Dorset Highways need to get some workable measures in place.
