Lower Winterborne

Residents of Lower Winterborne have the opportunity to shape their community through the development of a Neighbourhood Plan.

Dorset Council has approved a request from Lower Winterborne Parish Council on 4 July for the designation of a Neighbourhood Area, which is the first formal stage of preparing a plan. The application includes the parishes of Winterborne Kingston and Anderson but omits the parish of Winterborne Zelston.

Queen Thorne Parish Council have submitted an area application to amend the Queen Thorne Neighbourhood Area by retaining the parish of Trent but excluding the parishes of Over Compton, Nether Compton and Sandford Orcas. A Neighbourhood Plan aims to give residents more control over their local area, when plans for new homes, shops and offices in their town or village are considered.

Residents who have any comments about whether this is the right area for the Neighbourhood Plan to cover can send them to the Spatial Planning Team at Dorset Council by Friday 15 September 2023.

Once the plan is written, it will be consulted on locally and submitted to Dorset Council for independent examination. It will also be subject to a local referendum to make sure it has the support of local people.

Cllr Walsh, Portfolio Holder for planning, said:

“It is important to make sure that Neighbourhood Plans reflect the needs of the local community, so it important to have your say.

“I would encourage anyone with an interest in the future development in their community to view the plans to contact their local parish council to submit any feedback they may have.”

Residents can comment by post at Spatial Planning, County Hall, Colliton Park, Dorchester, DT1 1XJ or email neighbourhoodplanning@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk

Any parish council or parish meeting that might be interested in forming a neighbourhood plan should contact neighbourhoodplanning@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk for more information.

  1. Don’t imagine having a neighbourhood plan makes any difference. We have one of those in Gillingham and the district council completely overlooked it and have given planning permission for eighty homes in an area which was not agreed for development on the neighborhood plan. This is when over 2000 homes are planned on the southern extension as agreed on the neighborhood plan!
