Preventative treatments for Dorset’s roads in October

Work continues in October to preserve more of our roads using a preventative treatment called micro-surfacing.

Micro-surfacing seals the road, improves the texture and prevents water ingress. It is a cost-effective treatment for worn, but not structurally failing, roads that keeps them in good condition. It also adds reinforcement to the existing surface.

The work will be carried out by our contractors, Kiely, and affected households will receive a leaflet before the works start.

Due to the equipment size and number of vehicles used to carry out the work, roads will be closed for the treatment to be carried out.

Road closures will be from 8am to 5pm. An onsite team member will be available to address any queries.

Please look for advance notice signs which will be put out before the start of work. The signs will also contain contact information

Residents will also be asked to not park vehicles on the road/verges when the work is due to start: ‘No parking’ boards will be erected 2-3 days in advance.

A note about micro-surfacing

On application, the micro-asphalt may look ‘open’ with some loose chippings. However, after a few weeks (or longer, depending on traffic volumes) the material will bed in. It is not recommended that the material is rolled as this brings the ‘binder’, which sits below the surface, to the top; this would affect the final texture and performance. The contractor may sweep up any excess chippings.

  1. Could you please let me know when Sandy Close will be re surfaced?
We have been given several dates but so far nothing has happened.

  2. If West Bay Road was subject to this micro-surfacing in the last few weeks then, in my opinion, it was a complete waste of time.

The road is a patchwork quilt of repairs and the re-surfacing has done nothing to improve the texture or roughness of the surface.

As a cyclist this is much more evident.

As an affected resident I did not receive a leaflet explaining this, and I expect an explanation of this failure.

  3. The team that resurfaced Fairfield & Newfield Roads in Shroton DT11 did a really good job and were helpful and cheerful in the process, the only comment to make was that they prohibited entry on one occasion BEFORE the advertised 0900hrs start.

  4. Good to see that you are spending our money on roads. However, as your efficiency levels are without challenge I wonder if all of this is really necessary ? As a separate issue, please let us know when the chaos in Ferndown which has been produced by the inability of Dorset Highways to get a job done in an acceptable timescale will be completed.

  5. Far too many potholes still need fixing. Terrible danger to cyclists which you appear to be ignoring.

  6. When are you going to resurface the cronic road conditions on this side of BCP, ABOUT TIME YOU PAID SOME ATTENTION TO US OUR ROADS ARE DISGRACE, Christchurch Area, particular by pass.!!!

  7. Micro surfacing is absolute rubbish , blowing coarse chippings onto an unprepared surface with very little bitumen and not rolling in is nothing but a tick box exercise . I have witnessed this taking place and within a few weeks the chippings are every where but in the pot hole . I do a lot of cycling and everywhere this has taken place, in a few weeks it is back to square one , you should be ashamed for wasting money .

  8. Why has Dryden Close been passed over yet again? It is in a poor state, worse than some of those selected, and the surrounding roads are either scheduled or have been done recently. Is this section being left to disintegrate beyond repair?

  9. Living in a cul-de-sac where the ONLY access to the Dorset/Hampshire road network I believe a 3 day notification that access will be denied between 0800-1700 is utterly insufficient – for instance NHS appointments can be made many months previously to have to cancel because the road is closed at best with 3 days notice – ridiculous.

  10. You have just ‘completed’ Henbury close.

It looks absolutely shocking! Tar up the kerbs, couldn’t look more uneven and the guys used rakes to smooth it across the surface!

A 10 year old could have made a better job of this so I seriously hope this isn’t the finished product?

If it is we and the council deserve a refund from the company carrying out this work as it is of shocking quality.

Who do we need to contact to come out and survey what work has been done?

      1. Hi
I live in Birch close and the roads that have been done aren’t good either.
Sadly my car has taken the brunt of the works and has dried tar half way up my vehicle that has caused damage to the paintwork. I drove and still do very slow around the roads that have been resurfaced but it didn’t make a difference to the damage done.
        I’m very upset about it.
