In these most challenging of times, Tim was handed a life buoy and a fantastic career opportunity when he was appointed to help spearhead Dorset Council\u2019s innovative 5G Rural Dorset project. Tim shines a light on how his background in education and charity has brought him into the public sector.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_668\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-668\" style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-03-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" id=\"longdesc-return-668\" class=\" wp-image-668\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-03-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Project Manager, Timothy Robertson, reflects on leaving two-decades at the RNLI to jump ship and work for Digital Dorset.\" width=\"489\" height=\"367\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first?longdesc=668&amp;referrer=667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-03-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-03-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-03-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-03-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-03-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Project Manager, Timothy Robertson, reflects on leaving two-decades at the RNLI to set sail with Digital Dorset.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My role with Dorset Council is the latest change in direction for a very varied and interesting career that started in the primary classroom and always seems to be focussed on start-ups and innovation\u2026<\/p>\n<p>From teaching in a small school on the idyllic island of Sark for eight years to 18 years with the RNLI \u2013 I find myself at the age of 51 embarking on one of my most exciting journeys to date \u2013 working on the 5G Rural Dorset project.<\/p>\n<p>How did I get from living and working on an island with just 500 people and no cars to three decades later trialling one of the most innovative schemes to benefit rural Dorset?<\/p>\n<p>As a trainee teacher undergraduate, I specialised in scientific and environmental studies and although I\u2019ve held many positions over the years, they have always had one thing in common \u2013 innovation.<\/p>\n<p>My first job with the RNLI was as Regional Education Officer, recruiting and training volunteers and teaching young people about water safety.<a href=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-02-rs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-669 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-02-rs-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-02-rs-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-02-rs-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-02-rs-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-02-rs-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/04\/Timothy-02-rs.jpg 1732w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px\">After three successful years establishing youth education, my career took a different path when I was seconded to RNLI\u2019s HQ in Poole to manage a complex IT project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Digital continued to play a part in my career when this role led to the creation of the RNLI E-media team.<\/p>\n<p>From then I had fundraising and marketing manager roles, before eventually joining the newly established Lifesaving Innovation team.<\/p>\n<p>After a wonderful 18 years at the RNLI, I was made redundant in November 2019 \u2013 but I had already crossed paths with Dorset Council.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Earlier that year I was invited by the council to attend a workshop looking at connectivity challenges faced in rural Dorset and how 5G might help.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke about the communication challenges search and rescue organisations faced and how better connectivity was essential to inform people of coastal risks and make it easier for them to call for help in emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>This \u2018Connected Coast\u2019 idea was adopted by Dorset Council as one element of its bid for government funding to explore how 5G might benefit rural communities; and it advertised for project managers to support partners in delivering this.<\/p>\n<p>Being familiar with the challenges, I knew the project manager job was ideal for me and I took up the role in April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>After nearly a year, almost entirely under COVID lockdown conditions, I am pleased to have found myself part of a supportive and welcoming team.<\/p>\n<p>Despite never having met many of them (face to face) they do genuinely feel like colleagues and friends.<\/p>\n<p>If I had to choose one highlight so far, it would be the workshop session I hosted at the Dorset Innovation Park for 5G Rural Dorset members.
