Mention the word \u2018robot\u2019 and many of us will think of the stereotypical creature that\u00a0<\/span>featured in the cartoons of our childhood or in science fiction films.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"robot<\/a><\/p>\n

But robotic technology is very much part of our world now\u00a0<\/span>and is being\u00a0<\/span>considered\u00a0<\/span>in social care.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dorset Council has been part of the\u00a0<\/span>Robotics in Care Community of Interest (RICCOI), a\u00a0<\/span>forum<\/span>\u00a0for adult social care leaders,<\/span>\u00a0since it began in 2019<\/span>. The community<\/span>, which is facilitated by PA Consulting,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>explore<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and promote<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the potential\u00a0<\/span>of robotics within\u00a0<\/span>social care<\/span>\u00a0to help deal with our biggest\u00a0<\/span>challenges<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The community provides a forum to learn and share with<\/span>\u00a0other<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>organisations and\u00a0<\/span>to understand the opportunities and challenges<\/span>\u00a0presented by this emerging technology<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which resulted in the\u00a0<\/span>Robotics in Care Report<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>report<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>outlined s<\/span>ome of the challenges faced by the care sector<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>which\u00a0<\/span>can be eased\u00a0by the use of\u00a0robotics<\/span>. These\u00a0<\/span>include<\/span>\u00a0c<\/span>are workforce capacity<\/span>, p<\/span>reventing the need for care and supporting adults to live independently<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and a<\/span>ddressing social isolation<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However,\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>the survey from which the\u00a0<\/span>report is drawn, 3 out of 5 respondents said that\u00a0<\/span>\u2018understanding the robotics market and what is available is the top barrier in pursuing robotics solutions to their challenges\u2019<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are\u00a0<\/span>several<\/span>\u00a0different types of robotics available:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
