even their TV required a giant booster.<\/p>\n<p>The Burleigh\u2019s broadband was so poor that they might as well have been on 1990s dial up.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to 2021 and it\u2019s a whole different board game.<\/p>\n<p>The Burleigh family, who reside in the hamlet of Monkton Wyld, were just one of many in the Marshwood Vale to benefit from a \u00a31.02m investment in bringing full fibre to the premises in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>And despite living literally in the middle of nowhere, where they can just make out their neighbour on the other side of the valley, the Burleighs are enjoying internet speeds that would make many in London jealous. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-05-1-of-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-770 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-05-1-of-1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-05-1-of-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-05-1-of-1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-05-1-of-1-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-05-1-of-1-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-05-1-of-1-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-05-1-of-1-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen our fibre was first installed it was a revelation,\u201d Sophy recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is done on email or online these days and we were struggling so much just to do even basic browsing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were investigating satellite broadband when we found out that full fibre was coming to us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor people in our village, before the fibre the only option to get decent broadband was to travel to an internet caf\u00e9, which we all had to do by car because there\u2019s no public transport here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the fibre was installed it meant Sophy, who at the time was a part time teacher working across three schools, could do all her prep at home and download the latest teaching resources.<\/p>\n<p>It also meant that she and her husband Dave, who makes timber frame buildings, could run their businesses more efficiently. (In addition to being a primary school teacher, Sophy also runs a Farm School for children from her home and the couple are also farmers).<\/p>\n<p>But the massive difference came when the Covid pandemic struck and everything moved to online.<\/p>\n<p>Sophy said: \u201cI was able to make and upload videos at home, put them online and then send to my pupils for their remote learning. That would have been impossible in the pre-fibre days when I would have even struggled to send the children emails.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also keep livestock and we had already moved to registering the animals online but when Covid struck all the markets also moved online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t even begin to imagine how we would have got through the lockdowns on our old speeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-08-1-of-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-771 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-08-1-of-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-08-1-of-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-08-1-of-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-08-1-of-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-08-1-of-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/sophy-burleigh-08-1-of-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sophy has also seen the difference it has made to the lives of other people who live in her hamlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of our neighbours is a barrister who defended international cases from his home throughout the pandemic,\u201d Sophy said. \u201cHe even said the broadband was quicker here than in his office in London!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother family run holiday lets from their property and can now offer their visitors access to fast internet speeds \u2013 that must make a huge difference to their business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Sophy catches up on work emails from her garden table, the remoteness of where she lives is clear. Behind her is nothing but views of rolling hills and a faint glimpse of Lyme Bay in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, we\u2019re remote and yes we don\u2019t work in techy jobs, but even the most remote and rural of businesses need access to decent broadband these days,\u201d Sophy reflected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut are we hard to reach? There are telegraph polls right outside our property and the fibre was run through those. I can still vividly remember them installing it, it took no time at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this day and age no one should be hard to reach yet I\u2019ve seen first-hand how poor broadband affects people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the lockdown we had pupils that had to come into our school just because of poor connectivity or because their parents could not afford the bandwidth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen the difference it\u2019s made to our lives and I hope other people in rural areas can benefit as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The ones that have been left behind<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_740\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-740\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/05\/voucher-17-1-of-1resize-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" id=\"longdesc-return-740\" class=\" wp-image-740\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/05\/voucher-17-1-of-1resize-1-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Don't let broadband jargon drive you mad\" width=\"252\" height=\"353\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first?longdesc=740&amp;referrer=767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/05\/voucher-17-1-of-1resize-1-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/05\/voucher-17-1-of-1resize-1-731x1024.jpg 731w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/05\/voucher-17-1-of-1resize-1-768x1076.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/05\/voucher-17-1-of-1resize-1-1096x1536.jpg 1096w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/05\/voucher-17-1-of-1resize-1.jpg 1194w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Slow broadband is still proving a huge frustration from the ones &#8216;left behind&#8217; in the Marshwood Vale.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unfortunately, not everyone in the Marshwood Vale can repeat Sophy\u2019s success story.<\/p>\n<p>One couple living in the heart of the Vale was one of just two premises in their postcode, that were not connected through Dorset Council\u2019s Superfast programme.<\/p>\n<p>They try to get by on a top speed of 2 Mbps while a neighbouring household just 500m away, enjoys full fibre to the premises.<\/p>\n<p>Their situation became dire during lockdown, with both having to shield. More than ever they needed access to good broadband to do things like online shopping or e-consultations with doctors.<\/p>\n<p>Desperate, they tried the USO, however the 4G Home Hub was unsuitable and the full fibre quote was far too expensive to be met by the subsidy offer.<\/p>\n<p>Being a single premise also made the voucher subsidy difficult to access as well.<\/p>\n<p>But with it being their only option left, the couple are trying to pursue a Community Fibre Project with Openreach (the only supplier in the area). They are hoping that the telecoms giant can find other suitable properties in the area to join with them so it can apply for vouchers.<\/p>\n<p>They also contacted Dorset Council\u2019s Digital Place team more than a year ago for advice, but a viable\u00a0solution has yet to be found \u2013 even though they are a stone\u2019s throw away from fibre.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a million-pound investment in the Marshwood Vale there were still people missed out and these are clearly an example of Dorset\u2019s very hard to reach premises.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connecting the Marshwood Vale \u2013 the facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/Fibre-broadband-image-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-772 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/Fibre-broadband-image-2-300x182.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"407\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/Fibre-broadband-image-2-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/Fibre-broadband-image-2-1024x620.png 1024w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/Fibre-broadband-image-2-768x465.png 768w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/Fibre-broadband-image-2-1536x929.png 1536w, https:\/\/news.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk\/digital-first\/files\/2021\/06\/Fibre-broadband-image-2-2048x1239.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>From 2016 to 2017 more than 450 premises in the Marshwood Vale received FTTP through two Dorset Council Superfast contracts with Openreach.<\/li>\n<li>The current take-up in the Marshwood Vale ward is\u00a067.66%\u00a0(Contract 2) &#8211;\u00a071.32%\u00a0(Contract 1).\u00a0The take-up in this area\u00a0is comparatively higher\u00a0than\u00a0FTTP built at a similar time\u00a0in\u00a0urban and\u00a0suburban areas.<\/li>\n<li>There\u00a0remain\u00a0premises in this area\u00a0that do not have access to FTTP or Superfast connectivity despite the\u00a0proximity of fibre and infrastructure. Connecting these premises is proving very difficult.<\/li>\n<li>The still-to-be connected are often single premises and therefore not eligible for the voucher scheme. The USO offer does not offer enough subsidy to cover the cost of fibre delivery and mobile signal is too limited to allow a 4G solution.<\/li>\n<li>This legacy of postcode-based coverage in the Superfast programme has left these very hard to reach premises across Dorset in areas where the overall coverage is good.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nestled in the far western corner of Dorset is the stunning Marshwood Vale \u2013 made up of rolling hills and villages and hamlets scattered among the valleys.
