Dorset Highways is Dorset Council’s highways service and sits within the Place Directorate, which addresses the challenges of sustainable development in Dorset and is responsible for strategic planning, transport, and supporting the Dorset economy.
The directorate is responsible for around 2,300 miles of road and hundreds of acres of countryside for recreation and conservation purposes.
Dorset Highways
Dorset Council is the highway authority for Dorset, not including Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch.
Dorset Highways, the council’s highways and transportation service, is responsible for maintaining roads and pavements except the A31 and A35 trunk roads, which are managed by the Highways England.
We are based between Colliton Park in Dorchester, our main depot in Charminster and at local depots around the county.
Dorset Highways provides a full range of professional and technical highways and transportation services, supporting the aims and objectives of the council.
These technical and professional services include:
design, contract preparation and administration of highway and bridge improvement projects
assessment of the load carrying capacity of bridges
routine safety and condition inspections of bridges and safety fences
management of bridge routine maintenance works
design and administration of the installation of traffic signs, signals and street lighting
monitoring of the council’s Private Finance Initiative (PFI) term contract for the replacement and maintenance of street lighting, illuminated traffic signs
traffic noise and vibration investigations and advice
design and administration of works for the final reinstatement of landfill sites and construction of household recycling centres
design approval, construction planning, site supervision, enforcement and adoption of new streets
provide a diverse range of services for customers, including vehicle maintenance and sign manufacturing
We also:
manage traffic and work to reduce accidents on our roads through physical improvements and road safety education
support public transport services and promote sustainable types of travel, such as cycling and walking
develop a five-year Local Transport Plan in partnership with Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council to attract Government funding for transport in Dorset
work collaboratively with The Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (DLEP) which has secured funding from Government for a five year programme to improve access to South East Dorset including Aviation Park; a key site capable of delivering significant economic growth
