With the help of volunteers, thousands of photographs from the Poole Borough Archive are currently being catalogued. Mostly originating from Poole’s planning department, the photographs range from the mundane (photographs of drainpipes, shop fronts and cracks in walls!) to fascinating images capturing Poole’s recent history.
A picture is worth a thousand words….
The images provide an excellent insight into the town’s changing landscape, encompassing restoration projects; construction of a number of Borough schools in the 1950s and 1960s; major re-development projects, including the construction of the Arndale (now Dolphin) Centre; and shots of most of Poole’s streets and key buildings.
The descriptions of the photographs are now searchable on our online catalogue, and the photographs are viewable in our searchroom. The selection below includes the town cellars and warehouse which is now the site of Poole Museum; and the water pump on Paradise Street.
