What better way to get to get to know what a county archive does than to roll up your sleeves and work alongside us for a month?
Each summer we host undergraduates and give them an insight into our service. Last year’s students told us that the role was ‘perfect’ – they felt well set-up for dissertation research, understood how to source Medieval material and the challenges associated with such old documents, gained an understanding of social history, and had a chance to meet staff in different roles. Our students spent some time on site and some time on remote tasks.
Previous work experience students have written various blogs about their experience:
Work Experience at Dorset History Centre
Edna Bolton and the importance of oral histories
Work Experience and Dorset Heritage Week

This year we are planning to host two undergraduate students and the placement is popular, with more applications received than places available. If you’d like to be considered for work experience in the summer of 2023 please apply here, or contact us via email to arrange an informal discussion.
Please note that whilst we can pay some travel expenses for students, this is a volunteering opportunity.
