Hello,
As the first month of 2025 concludes, we felt it was a good time to share with you our retrospective look at 2024 and the work delivered by the Archives and Records Service. What is very clear to us is that despite the ubiquity of digital material and services through which to view it, there is still a huge amount of hard copy (paper and parchment) that remains to be collected, catalogued and made accessible. The project to catalogue Thomas Hardy’s archive reached its mid-point in December and funding was secured for further work to catalogue collections held by the service. It was particularly satisfying to see Dorset History Centre achieve successful re-accreditation via The National Archives.
Busy years across all areas of the service including the Historic Environment Record and the Portable Antiquities Scheme. As ever, the service has benefitted hugely from its loyal volunteers and the work of the Dorset Archives Trust and we are grateful to all involved.
If anything in this bite-size report intrigues you, please get in touch. We really value your comments and feedback – and of course if you haven’t already, please sign up for our newsletter to stay-up-to-date with what’s happening.
With best wishes for the rest of 2025,
Sam Johnston
Service Manager, Archives and Records
