Frink Archive at Dorset History Centre \u2013 an update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dorset History Centre <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has been lucky enough to be gifted the archive\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of Dame Elisabeth Frink, one of Britain\u2019s foremost modern sculptors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 this was provided to D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">HC in accordance with the wishes of the artist\u2019s late son Lin Jammet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 Work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to catalogue the archive has been underway since October and you will hear from the archivist undertaking this task in a future blog post.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Work on the collection itself has\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unfortunately been interrupted by the coronavirus outbreak, but there are still things we\u2019d like to share with you about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Frink and our project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first of these is that a new podcast has been <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">released by the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk\/about\/sculpting-lives\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Paul Mellon Centre<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The podcast<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which features DHC and the archive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0provides a fascinating and extremely accessible overview of Frink\u2019s life and career and puts her work into the context<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0both the era in which she lived, but also the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">artists with whom she mixed.\u00a0 What comes across strongly is that Frink<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was a true individualist \u2013 not willing to join any\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">particular \u2018school\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of art<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">even to the point of using seemingly out-of-favour techniques and materials in her work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0 Despite being hugely popular with the public \u2013 and the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">first\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">woman to be created a Royal Academician in the category of sculpture, it seems that only in more recent time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has her reputation (and the value of her works) begun to rise.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The podcast features significant input from Annette\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ratuszniak<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">former curator to the Frink Estate and a close collaborator on our project<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0here at DHC<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">The second thing we wish to mention is that t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hanks to fundraising by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorsetarchivestrust.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dorset Archives Trust<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and its President Val Pitt-Rivers, we were for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tunate in being able to raise over \u00a35,000 which allowed DHC to purchase<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a bespoke case in which to safely\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exhibit the several Frink bronzes that formed part of the gift\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">received by DHC.\u00a0 The case is now built\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and ready for delivery \u2013 as soon as we can re-open our doors!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0 Alongside the bronze sculpture, DHC also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">now owns several fragile Frink plaster\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">maquettes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 and these too, along with archival material will be displayed in our new case.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We look forwar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d to being able to make this available to the public in due course.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Longer term,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it is hoped that other Dorset-based notable artists and craftspeople will consider depositing their archives at DHC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Archives provide evidence and context \u2013 the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stories and detail behind the creation of works of art and why\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in turn we gain pleasure from viewing and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">engaging with the work.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"
